Boma: don’t think I can do it anymore

I don’t know if anyone else feels this way. I have always been kind of a germophobe. Have always enjoyed going to Boma, but last time I went (and nothing overly gross happened), I just became more aware of how kind of gross it is to continue to use the same utensils, and not knowing if people touching the food, etc.
I see a shocking number of people who walk out of the bathroom without washing their hands.
If you're done with Boma, I would say you should be done with eating out any place but your own home. That's the only place you can mostly control how groceries are bought and prepared, no take out or previously prepared dishes.
Any place that I've personally known people that worked there can tell you some stories you'd rather not hear or know. Thankfully, most of us have fairly good immune systems that can handle a lot. We take our best precautions and hope for the best.

We’ve eaten at Boma several times for breakfast and dinner, and never had a bad experience. I’ve eaten at many buffets; some I’d never return to, and some (like Boma) I’d have dinner at every day if I could afford it.

I’ve had food poisoning at least 6 times that i know of; the last time was from dinner at the Brown Derby in D.H. How do I know it was from there, one may well ask? I didn’t have anything other than a light breakfast 10 hours prior, and was sick within hours after my dinner. I ordered the pork chop and it came back pink..was assured that the meat was safe that way. I decided to put my instincts aside and ate it, regretted it that night—the night before we started our 1200 mile car trip home. That was a fun ride.

I’ll never eat at McDonalds again, never have pink pork again (no matter how it’s raised), will never order from a grocery store deli again, and am side-eyeing campground salads with suspicion (didn’t hear about the lettuce recall until too late). But bad food experiences can happen to any restaurant or eatery, anywhere. It’s the luck of the draw.

We don't do buffetts for several reasons but this is one of them.

Cross-contamination from multiple patrons handling utensils is one reason. And, while Disney is better than most, the amount of time food is held out makes me uncomfortable. I tend to have no-go ingredients that I won't eat unless prepared at home or in a restaurant of higher quality. Deep fried nuggets, while not a delicacy, are unlikely to make me ill from quick service, but I'll probably pass on the raw ahi-tuna unless it's from a signature.

Sure, it's never 100%, even at home, but we've found those choices tend to keep us reasonably healthy.

Bring on the buffets!!!!

My former next-door neighbor delivered for a beverage distributor for almost 30 years, and the stories he shared about restaurant backrooms would definitely make you never want to eat out again.
So true. Many years ago in college I used to cook at a chain restaurant (Thank Goodness It's Between Thursday and Saturday) and I remember the grill cook dropped a burger on the VERY disgusting floor, picked it up...put it back on the grill but on the wrong side that didn't hit the floor. Someone probably had a long night in the bathroom that night! Regardless if you knew what happened in most restaurant kitchens you would NOT eat out again.

That said so many Disney World patrons at buffets are really gross. Kids AND adults...sometimes adults much worse.

Not a germaphobe but have a healthy dislike of buffets for all the reasons listed here which boils down to people. Some people follow hygienic habits, some people do not. As such I leave the field wide open for others.

So, The main gripe , has a little to do with BOMA, and mostly due to the contamination factor...Which definitely is a concern, but I'm guessing that any buffet style would be a no no for you. I'd say that there are others that are a lil worse than BOMA IMHO as cleanliness goes.....

We love Boma was just in DW last week but had to cancel our reservation because my son was sick. We haven’t gone there in a long time and was looking forward to it and Yes buffets are not the most sanitary way to eat

Restaurants are gross in general. I also worked at McDonald's as a teenager. The stories.....

I'm personally not a germaphobe and believe it helps in keeping my immune system up. I rarely get sick and when I do it's not bad at all.

I'm not a buffet fan but wee happen to really enjoy Boma and had breakfast there two weeks ago. We couldn't squeeze dinner in but will next time we go. The only other buffet we've done in the last few years has been Tusker House and Boma.

We used to love TH Character breakfast... It was our 2nd fav. right behind 1900PF. But Yes BOMA as well as Jiko Sanaa & The Mara are all wonderful... This resort is definitely one of the best. The fact that it's further away from most of the parks, is not a deterrent to me, and it also has some of the best CM's out of any resort TBH.

You would love Disney cruise line, seriously. I just got off the Wish, and everything is behind a wall now at the buffet and the CM's serve you. I loved that. But more importantly, they have you wash your hands right before you enter the dining room. I do love Boma, but my pet peeve are parents allowing their kids to go help themselves, before teaching them the right way to do a buffet and always using tongs. I had to ask an older boy once, to not reach to the cookies with his hands and to use the tongs.

I haven't been on the Wish yet but been 32x on the first 4 ships. Unless this is unique to the Wish, they only have crew serving at buffets if there is an illness outbreak on the ship. That's only happened once for us, not including during the post covid re-start when crew members served for all buffets and the drink stations for about a year.

At Cabanas, they used to just hand out handwipes but I'm glad they put real sinks outside and make people stop and wash. That is new since covid. Still doesn't stop people from rubbing their nose or eyes before grabbing the serving spoon. :scared:

Yes, overall, I agree that DCL is way more conscious about infection control than the parks. :thumbsup2

This arrangement is permanent, not because of a sickness on the ship. All food is behind a plastic wall now, and the CM's serve you. I think all the ships should go this way, I am so surprised the others haven't followed suit, I hope they do!

I’m not a germaphobe, and I almost never sanitize my hands in the park. Buffets are still absolutely 100% disgusting. People be nasty. Not being disgusted by touching railings on a ride that someone rubbed all over with their pee paws is not the same as eating after touching utensils and plates touched by nasty people and their pee paws.

Yeah the difference is not ingesting something gross I touch in public. Buffets are made to be ingested so I’m more leery there. Does it look picked over by a herd of slophovens? Pass lol.

I’m a germaphobe. There are some places that gross me out and buffets and any child’s museum where they touch everything are high on that list. With that said there is no where I won’t go. I might just wash my hands a few times while there.

I put on a disposal latex glove before using the buffet spoons / tongs, then remove the glove inside out before eating. Always use hand sanitizer as well.

I worked in the prepared foods section of a high end grocery store. You likely have one of the stores in your area if you live within an hour and half of a city. The stores are quite expensive but consumers are willing to pay for the "quality." Their extensive hot and cold bars were a big reason why people went to the store. These are essentially buffets where you put your choices in a cardboard box and they are weighed at checkout..

I'm sure I've written about this before but it bears repeating. For the "homemade soups", we dumped huge plastic bags of the stuff into the metal soup containers in front of the deli area. Disgusting. The leftover soup at the end of the day got mixed into the next day's soup. The soup in the warmers were often several days of leftovers. In the kitchen where the prepared foods were made, we had a team of about 15 people. Ninety percent of them used the prep time to eat the popcorn shrimp, chicken wings, barbecue etc as if the foods were their personal snack station. This was using their bare hands. I never bought another item at the hot bar again when I saw workers licking their fingers and continuing to prep out back. This was not a situation of what I thought workers were doing. I was there watching it.

This tip is something some people may not be aware of. We had an extensive series of glass cases that would hold things such as the famous cranberry tuna fish, potato salads and the like. At the close of the store, we would pack those up in containers. In the morning the fresh items went in trays to the front of the glass cases. The older product would be closest the worker who was serving customers so you got rid of the day or two(or more) old items first. It was the same with meat and seafood.

Now when I go a store for fresh fish, I tell them I won't be cooking the fish for 2 days(not true) and could they give me their freshest pieces. Almost always they will go in the back and bring out the tub with that day's deliveries. The same with meats, especially ground meats. Also be aware that even though we were supposed to date the deli meats for slicing, a fair amount of workers never did. Hot tip on this- if you order a sliced deli meat that is not very popular, it may be significantly past its best buy date. For instance, I love rosemary ham but never order it because I know it has likely been sitting in the back of the meat fridge for who knows how long.

I will never eat in any buffets after watching customers stick their bare hands into items and pull out pieces to taste the foods. People coughed and sneezed and who knows if they even washed after using our bathrooms. I think people need to decide if it's worth the risk of possibly get an ecoli or norovirus infection when eating from a buffet. You just have no idea of what goes on behind the scenes. I won't even get into the every hour temp checks that were required but not adhered to.

Sorry to temporarily spoil your holiday appetite but I figured that a sanitation report might be helpful to those considering buffets or prepared foods.

What grocery store did you work in? I love those soups at Market Basket and it doesn't disturb me that they're in plastic bags to store them in. At one point, they're homemade, thats all that matters and they're delicious.
