What is "Smart Casual" for High School Reunion at fancy place?

Hi,

OK, tomorrow is DH's 25th High School Reunion. It is at a fancy place. Was planning the dressy outfits (dress/heels for me and suit for him), but just checked the info that was sent to DH and it says "Smart Casual". So now I'm a little confused (although, I'll admit I'll be happy with a more comfortable outfit!).

Can you please tell me what sorts of things "smart casual" mean for a reunion? I'm thinking of wearing a casual sweater dress with leggings and flat boots. Does that sound like it fits smart casual? Just confuses me, because it's at a place in Northern, NJ where we usually get dressed up.

What about for DH?

Thanks in advance!:)

I always thought it was casual that looked dressed up and more put together.

A google of "smart casual women" came up with several options including this one:

Your outfit sounds like it would work.

This is just casual and not "smart casual":

(couldn't copy the pic, but it is a model wearing a henley and jeans--looking very casual.)

I think your outfit sounds a little too casual. Smart casual is a little dressier than business casual like a blazer and pants. A nice blouse and dress pants etc. Men would probably wear a shirt and jacket but no tie or a shirt and tie but no jacket. Basically a step back from semi formal but a step up from business casual.

Your outfit sounds great, but I'd wear boots with a little bit of a heel.

My DH's favorite "smart casual" outfit is a silk-blend turtle neck shirt paired with a suede sports jacket, dress pants and highly-polished loafers. He's a bit of a clothes horse, but he has great taste and is always getting compliments on his "look."

I'd probably wear nice jeans and a fitted jacket or 'fancy' shirt and high heels or boots.
