What is must on your Thanksgiving table?

Turkey
Stuffing
Green Bean Casserole
Mashed Potatoes
Butternut Squash
Matzoh Ball Soup
Costco Pumpkin Pie
French Vanilla coffee

I think we might also make popovers this year.

Turkey. And if I never see green bean casserole again, it'll be too soon. FIL feels even stronger about it than me LOL

I have given this a lot of thought, and I'm going with...napkins. Otherwise, it isn't going to be pretty.

Lol I don't hate it but I will admit to throwing it on my plate out of obligation. Something about a plate heaped high with mashed potatoes , stuffing , and rolls with no protein to speak of just seems . . . Wrong.

Turkey
Cranberry sauce
Stuffing
mashed potatoes.

The rest I can live without.

I was just typing up a shopping list, and thought this would be a good place to share a recipe for homemade cranberry sauce. I got it a few years ago from a student; he makes it every year. Now I do too.

Phil’s Cranberry Sauce

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 12-ounce bag of cranberries

  • 1/3 cup orange juice
Combine sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil; add cranberries and Orange Juice. Return to a boil. Reduce heat and boil for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover and cool to room temperature Refrigerate until serving time

I wished that I could get away with it but doubt it. But would love to have instead, roast beef with the trimmings!

Smoked turkey by dh
Fried turkey by ds
Dressing
Gravy
Whole cranberry sauce homemade
Mashed potatoes
Green bean casserole - we 'love' it - not the canned recipe, but with onions, cheese, and other goodies added
Corn pudding
Stuffed celery/olives/green onions plate
Pies - pecan, cherry, pumpkin
Cranberry pecan muffins
Crusty dinner rolls
Sparkling cranberry drink

'Love' fixin' Thanksgiving Dinner!!
Also, eating leftovers!

I have to admit, I got really confused at people using the term "dressing". I've always used that to describe a salad dressing, like a vinaigrette etc, so when a PP suggested Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, I was a bit grossed out.
Google to the rescue. So "dressing" is stuffing that hasn't been cooked inside the bird. Gotcha. We've always called that stuffing, but I get that there's a difference.

I grew up being envious over the idea of what I saw essentially as the excuse to have two Christmases lol. I understood it a bit better when we threw a big Thanksgiving Dinner for my cousin who was visiting from the US, and I really like the idea of Thanksgiving.
It's nice that everyone has their own ideas of what makes the meal special. Family Traditions.

We don't get to have Thanksgiving, but if I did, I'd have a duplicate of my favourite Christmas meal.
Turkey and bacon, Yorkshire pudding, sausage meatball (gran's recipe), stuffing, mashed potatoes and roasties, a mix up of veggies, including being forced to eat sprouts, bread sauce and lot of tasty turkey gravy. Cranberry sauce optional.

I'd have warm Pecan pie for dessert. We usually have Christmas pudding, Gran used to get an awesome American style pecan pie that I loved but they stopped selling them :(

Then we have turkey curry and turkey sandwiches and other leftovers for the next week.

ETA: green bean casserole sounds tasty!

Roasted turkey
Stuffing
cheesy potatoes or regular with gravy
sweet potatoes with brown sugar/butter gravy
cranberry from a can (gotta have those ridges in it)
garlic butter green beans
salad
rolls with Texas Roadhouse butter
pumpkin pie
apple pie

Yuuummmmmmmm one of my favorite meals of the year!

No gravy? What's the point without gravy?

Sad that many just don't enjoy the true bliss that is sopping it up.

Sop it up people!! Think of the children.
Sop it up with your crescents.
Sop it up with your grands.
Sop it up with your dinner rolls.
Sop it up with your potatoes
Sop it up with your stuffing.
Sop it up with your turkey.
You can even sop it up with your rice if you like.
Sop it up the next morning with your sausage and biscuits.

Please describe turkey and bacon, sausage meatball and bread sauce. I'm intrigued!! :scratchin

Roasted Turkey injected with Cajun butter
Ham
Cornbread Dressing
Giblet Gravy
Cranberry Sauce
Mashed Potatoes
Some kind of Vegetable
Broccoli Rice Casserole
Homemade Pies that must include pumpkin, apple and derby pie

Around here, Dungeness crab seems to be popular. It's dependent on when the state of California opens the commercial fishing season for the region, and many are hoping for it to start before Thanksgiving. There can be more expensive crab caught off of Oregon.

I suppose on of the more interesting things I've experienced was being invited to a Chinese-American family's Thanksgiving. Besides traditional Chinese food, they roasted a turkey stuffed with sticky rice. The rice stuffing included chestnuts, pork, and ****ake mushrooms.
