What is it with people writing checks!

I write checks alot at the grocery store or at Target/Walmart/CVS due to the restrictions of my bank and how I have my accounts set up. I like my accounts set up that way and the check card to our joint account we can only have one of...so if DH needs it, then I write a check, simple as that. Also, I always learned to keep an extra check or two in my wallet, just in case....you never know when you might forget card at home and have a whole shopping cart of stuff ;)

So, sometimes even us that have check cards may need to write checks for some reason.....I promise if I am in front of you to have in partially filled out with ID ready so cut me a break please :cutie:.

I write checks. sometimes i use coupons too. i am not slow but average i guess. if a minute to a minute and a half makes a lot of difference to the person behind me maybe that person should be managing their time better.
Thank you. I was hoping to find a post to quote :) i.e. someone who feels the same way I do :thumbsup2

All these posters who are irritated to any degree over the delay caused by shoppers paying by check (and assuming that series of Visa check card commercials last year has nothing to do with the feelings ;))
How long do you spend in the store, shopping?
How long do you spend in line, checking out?
Now, how many minutes are added to that combined time, by shoppers paying by check? Really?
Say it takes you twenty-five minutes to shop, and ten minutes to check out. Now it takes three more minutes because one customer writes a check. Thirty-eight minutes, vs. thirty-five? Is that really so bad?

But how hard is it to fill out the name of the place, the date and sign it while the cashier is ringing up your $200 in groceries. AND then when they stop and have to write it down in their check register. Again, you can fill everything out but the amount and it takes less than 10 seconds.
I'd rather be watching the cashier - to be sure nothing overrings or underrings - than preparing a check. And recording in the register on the spot generally ensures accurate recording; how do you track your debit card purchases to balance your account monthly?

What I do because I know I am paying by check: I fill in all the information at home except the amount. So I can watch everything, then the cashier does a total and I see that before they start scanning my coupons, I estimate coupon deductions and then fill in the amount while they are finishing the coupons. My store offers cash back on checks or debit so if I write for more than the total I get cash back. At this point I don't write anything in the register, I grab my receipt, push my cart out of the way and stop at the end of the register to write in the amount..this way next person in line is being taken care of and I can take my time organizing before I walk out of the store.

You don't have a Dominos or a Pizza Hut nearby? What part of Michigan are you in?

The part that doesn't have Domino's or Pizza Hut.... we're kind of in no-man's land...an hour away from everywhere (but outside of pizza delivery zones for everywhere except the local mom and pop places)

Sigh...

The don't. They need the extra time in the checkout line because they have to get home to check their balance online. Whatever the bank says they have, is what they have. See how easy it is? :rotfl:

I had to write a check today for groceries. I was at the check out swipped my debit card as she started to scan the items. then she swipped my coupons, there was a problem with one of thier store coupons, so it took a moment to fix. She told me the total I said I already swipped it, she hit a button, asked me to swipe it again; I did, swiped it 2 more times. She said I reached my daily limit? That was the only place I used my card today. So I had to write a check. A friend at work said that has happened to her to, if you swipe it to many times is temporarly locks up the card.

I was so frustrated, I will wait until they are done ringing it up before I swipe it.

And what happens when you swipe your debit card after they scan the first item and they hit total before scanning your coupons??

They always ask if that is all. I don't really use coupons anyway. But that has never been an issue.

I don't see why I would give up writing checks just because I could tie it to a debit card and it would be the same. To me, I would still have to keep a ledger of the place/amount/date of it.

I have never had anyone illegally take money from my checking account but I know many people who have had that happen to their debit cards. No thanks, I will do what has always worked for me.

I do hate when people try to crowd around me at the register. Let me finish my transaction and then I will move.

I use MS Money and download all of my transactions to the program. There is my ledger. :)
