What is it with Fidelity's prices

We've been keeping an eye out for another OKW contract and the offerings on the Fidelity site have me baffled--their prices are all over the place, ranging from a perfectly reasonable $55 a point to a perfectly unreasonable $100 a point:eek: Some of the prices are weirdly specific, for instance, $77.78 a point. What's the deal? Do they just let anyone list at whatever they want without offering a suggestion as to what a reasonable price might be?

I'm pretty sure that they list at the price that the seller requests. Other than placing it on the web site it isn't going to take much work, it's not like they are probably taking a lot of calls on those over priced contracts.

Typically those contracts with strange prices are because people have loans that they want to pay off from the sale.

Sure sounds that way. I don't have any experience selling, but it would seem to me that they would flag something that is totally outrageous and offer a reasonable suggestion to the seller. (like, say, the $120pp SSR listing that they have up there.) :confused3

Regardless though, the seller could have a loan they're trying to pay off and if someone is ignorant enough to pay $120 for SSR - good for the seller.

Yes, what the seller wishes or needs to sell at is what they list it. They are only brokers and do not own the points. They will most likely advise on pricing but it's all up to the seller.

Also, some of the listings on their website are older and are based on resale prices from a market in which prices were higher.

I specifically asked about some of the higher prices - I thought maybe it was a mistake (first time I looked). I was told they are often cases where an owner cannot afford to go lower due to a loan.

when DVC owners with little internet savvy and no knowledge of how resales work called DVC needing to sell, fidelity (used to be GE) was who DVC would recommend they contact. not sure if that's still the case but i suspect fidelity is where you'll find the sellers with the least understanding of what is going on.

that can be a benefit in some cases (lower prices) but can involve more complications in other cases.

We tried to put a contract through with Fidelity and OKW was listed by the seller at $50 a point,so I didn't even negotiate, but it did not pass ROFR, so we are now looking at Saratoga but the prices on Fidelity are outrageous

A lot of people have loans and they want to break even after the commission. Brokers provide guidance when sellers want to list their contracts, but ultimately the seller has the final say as to what the price is. Also, a lot of sellers are unsophisticated and don't understand how ridiculous their asking price is to educated buyers. But don't worry, lots of great deals for SSR show up on Fidelity, so have patience. :)

When did your OKW contract not pass ROFR? Before or after the cruise/RCI/Disney Collection exclusion/change?

How many points are you looking for? Fidelity has lots of listings. Eventually you should find one to your liking. I went with Fidelity for our contract and paid $50 per point for SSR with all 2012 points.

How can you tell how old the listings are?

We recently made several offers at Fidelity. They told us reference numbers starting with 135 are the current ones.
