What is it about dogs?

That make people feel so secure? I can't stand being home alone without my dog, it's not because I'm afraid people are going to break in (I live in the most boring town on earth) but, the movie Bloody Mary really scared me, and we have like a million mirrors in my house, and there's still a part of me that thinks I'm going to see her. Anyway, my dog always makes me feel safe, like she could fight anything bad off. :dog2:

I feel the same way, which is ridiculous seeing my dog weighs 14 lbs and is scared of the dark. But I think there is something to be said for a barking dog in a house when someone comes to the door. My dog always comes through for me and pulls out her 'big, mean' bark when it happens to be a stranger.

I feel more secure with Bogart because I know that even though he's short he could still (and would) tear someone up. He's my bodyguard.

Because the love us unconditionally; most of our dogs would hide behind me if threatened but they make lots of noise.

I definitly feel safer when my Jake is around. I'm not sure how much damage she could actually do to someone, but her bark is enough to scare anyone off. We always say this one thing about our old dog, Nakita (she was a 70-ish-pound Husky/Alaskan Malamute mix). We say "If anyboy ever broke into our house to steal anything, she would hold the door and help them carry whatever they wanted out, but if anybody would try to hurt one "her people", well, they would be a goner."

I don't know, but I feel the same way! :confused3

My dog is also scared of the dark and would probably lick a potential robber and invite them in with open arms (paws) :rotfl2:

I always talk to my dog when I'm alone and scared, maybe thats what makes me feel secure? :paw:

I am not always sure what "it" is dogs do for me, but I am glad to get "it" from dogs.

Her are a few quotes about dogs:

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.
-Ann Landers

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.
-Will Rogers

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.
-Ben Williams

A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves
himself.
-Josh Billings

Aw, you know that Maddy would protect you with her life!

When repairmen, delivery people, etc are in the house, Shiloh is fine with them, wants them to pet him etc, unless he notices that they are getting to close to his mommy (that would be me!) Hell hath no fury like a jealous Weimaraner!

That's why we have to keep him on a leash when strangers are in the house.

We have to kennel Maddy when repairmen are in the house because she certainly doesn't want them in her house. As she gets older, she gets more protective- the hair on her back stands up and she barks incessently- it's a scary nasty bark too. I like it. I have to think that anyone would think twice before trying to enter this house or do harm to our family.

I feel much better with a retriever. I'll never go back to a small dog. I find it interesting when I answer the door and whoever is there literally backs up when they see the dog. :teeth:

When a new babysitter was in the house when DS was small, this dog sat at DS's side and growled when the sitter got too close! :teeth:

Minky is a sweetie but I have every reason to believe that if a stranger crossed my threshold intending to do me harm, Minky would eat their face off. I love having him around. He is a very big Standard Poodle, but when he is "grown out' he looks like a small bear. You can't see his black eyes, only his teeth, so he can be intimidating to people who don't know him. I have have no problems with salesmen, repairmen, or other "men" who would think we might be an easy mark. :sunny:

This reminds me of this one day that I was home by myself. It was around my mom's birthday and my grandma had sent her flowers. I was home by myself and my grandma called to let me know that somebody was delivering flowers. I just came in from walking Jake, so she was still on her leash and I was holding her leash in my hand. The guy came to delvier the flowers and when I went to the door, he just stared at Jake. Jake was barking at him and going nuts. He was begging me to not let the dog out. He kept saying "Don't let that dog out! Don't let her come out here." I told him he could just set the flowers down on the porch and I would get them in a second. He kept saying "Don't let that dog come near me! Don't let that dog out!" Now, looking back, I realize how funny that was. Can you picture this guy with a fairly big build begging me to not let my 35 pound puppy out? HEHE!

I feel totally safe with my Golden around, when I'm home alone. My DH is a firefighter, so I'm home alone a LOT.

She sounds totally vicious too. You just have to look past the fact that when she's barking, she has a big stuffed animal hanging out of her mouth.

Thinking about it, I guess I do feel better having Mac the Scottie in the house with me. He has a tremendous bark and could do some serious damage--from the knees down. His mouth and teeth are the size of a German Shepard's. Not bad for a 30 lb. doggie. Tipper, on the otherhand, is such a coward--she'd hide under the bed if someone broke in.

Sounds alot like Minky. He has an array of pink stuffed babies  I think there may be some gender confusion.
