Just read through some posts about iced wine. What is it? Where can you get it? What makes it so wonderful?

Thanks for the info.

is a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, so the result is a concentrated, often very sweet wine. In the case of ice wines, the freezing happens before the fermentation, not afterwards. Unlike the grapes from which other dessert wines, such as Sauternes, Tokaji, or Trockenbeerenauslese, are made, ice wine grapes should not be affected by Botrytis cinerea or noble rot. Only healthy grapes keep in good shape until the opportunity for ice wine harvest, which may be in the next calendar year. This gives ice wine its characteristic refreshing sweetness balanced by high acidity. When the grapes are free of Botrytis, they are said to come in "clean".

so should i try it first during the Food & Wine fest?
or wait till LeCellier and my 50th birthday celebration lunch? (yes I'm having lunch there on my actual 50th birthday - not give or take a day)

Wow - great summary, abaldacci! I've only had it a few times, but it sure is yummy!

Ice Wine is the most wonderful thing in the whole world!! It is very sweet and yummy. You can get it in Le Cellier/ Canada in Epcot and it is on a lot of the signiature wine lists at WDW as Mission Hills.

Hi, IF you think you will REALLY like this wine I would wait for your BIRTHDAY to try it. I had it for the first time at LeCellier this past summer and not only was it DELICIOUS but the "POUR" was VERY generous. We actually bought a bottle of the ice wine to take home with us and now we are waiting for a SPECIAL occasion to open it !! Joan

Do they really have trockenbeerenauslese at Le Cellier? Is that the only place? Can you get just that, or do you have to be dining?

I love sweet wines, and I've heard alot about this type of wine. I'd really like to try it. But from what I've heard, it's also very expensive.

Is there any further information about this?

I love ice wine! Like the other posters have said, LC has it. If you go during the F&WF the kiosk has it too. But only an ounce pour. It's very sweet and expensive. And I mean very sweet and very expensive! Don't get too attached!

It's wonderful! You'll really enjoy trying it! After we did, we bought two bottles. Alas, they are gone now, but we've shared with many friends. We're planning on getting some this next trip during the F&W.

:) Ah, Icewine, my most favorite wine in the world. It is so goooooood! I could lick the glass. First tried it in Disney, about 7 years ago in Canada, brand was Hillebrand Estates, was oh so good. I highly recommend it.

Yummy:cloud9:

If you don't mind me asking, just exactly how expensive is expensive?

I think it was around 15.00 a glass but not your normal wine glass. our waitress gave me a GOOD pour, which was great and complemented the choc. whiskey cake. some go for the steak, some go for the bread, some go for the cheese soup.......i like the ice wine/choc. whiskey cake combo.

In addition to Canada, the New York Finger Lakes wine region is also noted for ice wine. We are just across Lake Ontario from Canada. One of my favorite ice wines is Standing Stone's Vidal Ice Wine. It is about $25 for a 375 ml bottle. http://www.standingstonewines.com/
Their web site indicates where you can purchase their wines but the locations are limited. They do mail order to some states but it is a little pricey.

I paid around $15.00 for the Inniskillin at Le Cellier. It is served in a small glass. It is expensive, but very good!

We paid about $52 a bottle, but keep in mind that they're smaller bottles than normal wine. When I first got Ice Wine @ the F&W Festival, I was shocked when I saw the size of the pour for the $. After I tried it, I understood why. I love how it coats the tongue.

IMHO is the Ice Wine and Creme Brulee together. The Creme Brulee maxes out your tongue on sweet and then the Ice Wine comes in and fills it with flavor. (I had to have some before I took the picture.) We had ours at Canada's Le Cellier. I would recommend that to everyone.
