Hi all,

What is chicken stock. Please put it simple terms like talking a toddler please so I understand what saying. I have recipe that's calling for chicken stock and I do not know what it is.

Also I can I buy it at the store.

Chicken stock is a 'richer' version of chicken broth. You can buy it at the store in the soup aisle, or you can use chicken broth (also in the soup aisle).

Thank You Thank You. You save me from going to the grocery store and asking where the chicken stock. People looking at like I am crazy. Now I can cook dinner tomorrow with going to the store. I have chicken broth at the house.

Chicken stock isn't that hard to make. Throw a few lbs of chicken bones in a stockpot with some veggies (onions, carrots, celery...whatever you've got that's not too strong). Cover with water and simmer about 2 hours. Strain out the bones and veggies, and you're done. My problem is that I never buy chicken with bones so I don't have any to use for stock.

I always use Chicken and Beef Base. I am not totally sure what the difference is, but I use it in place of stock or broth. It comes in a tub by the spices at Sam's Club, 1 tsp and a cup of water makes a cup of broth. It is only about $3 a tub (1lb) and lasts a long time!

Look for chicken stock/broth in the low sodium varieties. They can be really salty otherwise. This way, you can adjust and add more salt as needed yourself.

From this month's Wegman's Menu Magazine:

Simply put, stocks are usually made from bones or carcasses, with ingredients like vegetales and aromatics added. Broths have meat added to them (like using a whole chicken, for example).

Hope that helps.
Susan

I also buy the low sodium broth. I am too lazy to boil bones!!!:goodvibes

Depending on what you are making they do sell broth in large cans as well. Hate to see you go to the store and buy a bunch of small cans when 2 large would do! :thumbsup2

I use bullion cubes in a pinch (or if I just need a little) but I prefer using real stock or broth - the bullion is way too salty. And yes, low sodium. And the organic is worth it too.

Okay what's a stockpot. I have no idea what that is.

I am stick with the chicken broth. That makes more sense to me.
