Just wondering....

I am taking my DD9 to see Miley Cyrus tomorrow night and the venue says all that is allowed is a 'Small Digital Camera'

I was thinking my D700 & 180/2.8 is small and digital- but maybe not small enough? How about a D40 with an 18-200vr? The only other thing I have is my wifes Canon PowerShot SX110 IS- which has video so they may not like that too much either. Any thoughts? Been a long time since I have been to a concert so not sure how close they might look at this stuff.

It may depend on the venue. I have a photographer friend in Chicago who was allowed to bring in her 5D??

usually that means no slrs/dslrs

Doesn't it depend on how big the person is who is carrying it?

Dave pirate:

It sounds like a perfect reason to go shopping tonight...

Seriously though, I would call and ask to speak to the head of security to get a clear answer. Also, it would not hurt to write down his/her name in case the gate security interprets it differently.

When we went to see Disney on Ice last month the guard came over and said to me "No big lens camera's" so I took off the 55-200 and put on the 18-55. He came back over to me and said that's still considered a big lens:confused3 He was nice about it and later came back over and said to snap away cause the other guard apparently didn't mind or whatever. At the Borgatta in Atlantic City they flat out told me over the phone, "No SLR's"

I found this on the SP Times Forum site under guest services faq.
Q: Am I allowed to take pictures or video?
A: Video cameras are not permitted into the St. Pete Times Forum. For all Lightning games, spectators are allowed to bring in cameras that do not have a detachable lens or large telephoto lens. Guests wanting to know the specific policy for other events should call the box office prior to arrival at 813.301.6500.

I know it does not clarify the policy for concerts, but at least you have a phone number to call.

Plus... under Building Policies
The following items will not be allowed at St. Pete Times Forum events
•Cameras meeting designated event standards will be permitted, but camera bags will not be permitted.

I would say it should be able to fit in your pocket. We went to see U2 at Giants Stadium this fall and I really wanted to bring my SLR and DH said no way so we brought the old Sony P&S. Have a great time at the concert. I'm sure your DD will have a blast.

Sounds like it is time to pick up a Canon G11! ;)

I usually don't post on this board but I took my daughter to see Miley a few weeks ago. I only had my cell phone, didn't think cameras were allowed.

In case it matters, the stage is very lit up. There are huge screens and stairs that light up, they washed out all my photos.

If you get a decent shot of the flying motorcycle I'd love to see it!

A D700 is a small DSLR. A D3 is large. That's my opinion.

I had the same situation when I flew in a glider a few months ago. The sign said no large cameras. I thought I'd leave the 1D on the ground with the 70-200mm and go up with the 5D and the 17-40mm. They clarified it to mean no SLRs or anything that looks like an SLR. I went up with the G9 instead. Their concern was scratching the canopy. A new canopy costs $6,000.

Just taking a guess here...

I am assuming they do not want DSLR's in the venue. Now of course a DSLR could only have a 10-20mm lens on it and a P&S could have as much as 300mm of reach but the big point I think they try to make is that if a person is allowed to bring a DSLR, they should be allowed to take their 500mm f2 lens (if there is such a thing) with it if they so desire. This becomes a problem to the other people at the show when your lens is blocking their view. Therefore, they are not trying to make it so that you CAN'T take a pic (thus allowing P&S cameras) but more that it is the possible physical size of the DSLR that bugs them.

This was explained to me by a Fenway Park employee. Although they don't care what you bring into Fenway, they did say that I would have to give up my seat if it got in the way of other people watching the game (and they complained about it).

I would also assume no DSLR's.

But, that being said, I have been to multiple concerts where the rules on the ticket do not match the rules enforced while you are at the concert. At a U2 concert the ticket specified no cameras, I didn't take one. Later I talked to a friend who was a security guard, he said they weren't taking any cameras, I could have taken pictures all day, and I was in the 6th row!!!!! ( This was 1987, btw)

But even recently, I was allowed to carry a point n shoot into a couple of concerts that specified no cameras and saw other people taking pics with DSLR's. Security did nothing.

I say take the DSLR, but be prepared to take it back to the car and have a point n shoot just in case.

Thanks for the advice all-

To avoid being forced to leave anything in the car I just took the P&S. I saw one guy outside with a dslr but have no idea if he got inside with it- at the gate they asked me twice if mine was a 'regular camera' and I said 'yes.' Not the best option since the only seats we could get were in the nose bleed section but we had a fun time nonetheless. More pictures are HERE.

Kind of a ways from the stage...

Lots of booty shorts- this concert made me feel like DD9 is growing up way too fast- the last show I was with her at here was 'The Wiggles' :rolleyes1

Great shots - especially considering how far away from the stage you were sitting....and how lucky for you to even get tickets to this show. You're one great daddy to acomplish that feat!

Congrats on finding the mythical point and shoot that takes good low-light pictures. Because we all KNOW it's the gear not the photographer.

Great job.

All I can say is that you're a great dad, Jeff :thumbsup2!

Great pictures, btw!

:rotfl2: Weird.

Love this shot---the silhouette of the hand, all of the cell phones (?) in the audience and the colors are great.

Glad you guys had a good time, nose bleed seats or not I'm sure it's something your DD will remember for a long time. :thumbsup2

What an awesome opportunity! I also love the shot with the hand in the air. You definitely did a great job capturing the spirit of the event with your less than first choice camera and less than front row seats. That takes some skill!

Events like this frustrate me because I can't stand to watch something so visual without my DSLR in my hands. Even Disney on ice frustrates me. I snuck my DSLR in last time, but probably won't be able to next time now that they have installed metal detectors at the entrance to the arena. And I'm also not excited about being turned down at the door and having to leave it in the car....

Great shots Jeff!! I do have one question though; I bought DW the same camera a year or so ago because of some pictures that you took at the studios and the Beauty/Beast show with it. How do you get around the high noise? It seems like all of her pictures have a lot of noise. I know what to do with my Pentax (slap on the 50mm prime) but not really an option for us, is it? :thumbsup2 Here is a good example I think.
