What is a pm?

When someone wants to rent points, I see the posts: I just sent you a pm.

What does that mean?

A PM is a Personal Message or Private Message, a function included in most forum software, including the DIS. It will make a Pop-up on your screen with the message. To use the feature on the DIS, click on the users nametag on the left side of their post, a menu will appear with "Send a Private Message to User"

It is a Private Message. There is an option to send a private message to a member so that you can talk to them without everyone else reading your post.
