No but practically the whole country shuts down for Christmas. What about those people for whom it is just another day?
They go out for Chinese

The movie theater. Seriously, it's a big day for them. My Christian cousin went last year because her DH was working that day. Why not?

It makes as much sense as anyone who has to take their religious holiday off as time off without pay (or not take it at all) because the whole world soes not celebrate their holiday.
There's a real simple solution to this. Many employers offer their worker "Preference Holidays". Where I work we get three extra days beyond corporate holidays to take off for whatever we wish. They are not vacation days as they cannot be rolled over, nor cashed out if you leave the company. I have co-workers that use them for non-Christian religious holidays.

My mom and her husband don't celebrate Christmas (for the same reasons as I mentioned why Christmas is no big deal to me) and this is what they do every year, seriously.

I agree. I believe in a way Christians are being overlooked. We have to be so politically correct about every other Holiday but yet Christians are not allowed to put up signs that say "Jesus is the reason for the season" or things like that.
No? People actually come and tell you how to decorate your house? :confused3

Not every company has this. I don't get days like that, and I like to take off for Passover.

I didn't claim every company offered them, I pointed it out as a simple equitable solution that many companys offer. As our society continues to become culturally diverse, I think the trend will spread further with time.

I wouldn't be sure about that many.

My church is Catholic--they are pretty adept at remembering the proper reason for their existance. But I'm sure you'll come back and say something about that too. There's a thread for that one as well.
Dunno if she did but I will.....

I wonder how well they remembered "turn the other cheek" during the crusades.

And oh man you gotta love how well some priests followed "suffer the children to come unto me"

Honest question? Why would you quote the bible if you don't believe it to be true?
Um....because the bible talks about how persecuted the JEWS were maybe? Or did you happen to miss that whole Holocause thing back in WWII?

Google the term "preference holidays" (in quotes) and see how many hits you get from companys talking about their employee benefits. I think you'll be surprised. I'm sure they also go by different names from company to company.

I'll check that out in the morning, thanks. I am on the benefit's committee at work and perhaps I can bring this up!

This thread may as well be titled "Let's catfight about Christianity tonight"

Just for the record, I am indeed a Christian and I think the idea of a
"Holiday tree" is silly. Everyone knows it's a Christmas tree. Regardless of its actual origins, which, BTW, I don't think anyone here really cares about as much as jipsy, it will always be a Christmas tree. It's not used in Hannakah, it's not used in Kwanzaa, it is only used during the Christmas holiday. Is it an integral part of Christianity? Of course not. Is it even a Christian symbol? No it's not. It is just a tradition. No earthshattering symbol of Christianity. Just a tree with some pretty lights and decorations. That's it. But just the thought of the name being changed to something other than Christmas tree just for the sake of being pc is just so silly to me.

simpilotswife- I asked why that person had quoted the bible because they had made it quite clear that they were not Christians-therefore not believing that the bible was true. I was curious why they would use it as a reference. I'm not sure how my question led to your above statement?

After reading this thread it's clear that this person enjoys just talking pot-shots at any opportunity. They seem to have an axe to grind.

So, about those HOLIDAY TREES...

In your effort to educate the Christians here, I would like to return the favor and make you aware of something about Christians. Christians are not better-at anything. We are not above anything and are capable of committing all sorts of horrible things just like everyone else. Everytime I read a christian-bashing thread I hear about how "bad" christians treat people and how this christian leader did this awful thing or how these christian people acted towards someone. Case in point is that ALL people sin, including Christians. Making the nasty comments about the priests only reflects on your judgement towards others.

I have yet to see a holiday tree sign or hear the words "holiday tree" in real life.

In real life, the only times I ever hear about the "attack on Christianity" is on these boards and Bill O'Reilly. My friends are predominatly of Christian faith, but many are Jews, Muslims, Buddists, agnostics and atheists.

A faithful person should not be swayed or intimidated by such silly PC speech.I cannot see why it is so bothersome - especially in the case of "holiday tree". IMHO, Jesus would be more concerned with how you treated your fellow humans on a daily basis than how you would celebrate his birthday.

The intent of the PC is inclusion rather than exclusion - admitedly PC speech is usually a waste of my time. (with the exception of names and statements that are openly hostile towards a race or religion or other innocent group - these I am glad we have replaced).

Holiday tree, schmoliday tree. Take a deep breath and realize that in the scheme of things a Christmas Tree or Holiday tree has little with how you express your faith in Jesus.

Gee and here I thought it only reflected on my judgements about how much better the Catholics were at following the bible.

I did, I was just pointing out that the tradition of The CHRISTMAS tree has been around since Martin Luther. prior to that it was not referred to as a Christmas tree. I was showing how it came to be here, in America as well.
Which is exactly her point.
