What if your trip spans 2 use years?

Ok, I'm totally new to DVC - still looking at buying here shortly. DH and I were married at Disney this past April 29. So, every year we'd like to do a Disney trip that same week (I guess until we have kids in school). We're looking at buying into AKL, and we were told that our use years would start in May - so if we went this spring we'd be there 4 days in APril and 3 in May -will we have to use points from 2 different years to do the ressie? :confused3

no - think it starts the end of may - but even if it doesn't just bank the points you need for May into next year.

really don't think this is necessary.

You can request a different UY which may work better anyway given your intended dates of travel. :)

HEY! RALEIGH! I'm in Wilson. :)

Oh! I didn't realize we could do that! That may be best for us since we do want to travel in the April/May timeframe at least for the next several years and I'm worried that it'd get too confusing trying to use points right at the end of our use year every year. Plus if we had to cancel or change last minute it might mean we'd be more likely to lose points.

Nice to see another NC Disser - seems like I hardly ever run into any! We're in Holly Springs, but putting that on here seemed silly - who would know where that is? :)

Oh wow - yes, request a different UY!! You may have to be insistant but they should accomodate if that means the sale. ;)

If you plan to always vacation at the end of April/start of May you could actually use 4 years worth of points instead of 3 since you are taking the trip in 2 different use years.

Somebody else will have to give you the particulars on that.

There is no May Use Year. The possible UYs are: Feb, Mar, Apr, Jun, Aug, Sep, Oct and Dec.

Here is what I think is confusing you. If you purchase a contract tied to a Unit in Kidani Village, your AKV points cannot be used for any nights prior to May 1, 2009. The reason behind the restriction is because 05/01/09 is the occupancy date for the Units currently being sold there. Your AKV points will not be valid for stays at AKV or any other resort until your Unit at AKV is open.

If you are purchasing direct from Disney, see if they have a March UY. Based on your anticipated travel plans, March would work very well for you.

only if you are buying thru DVC - a resalers does not have this option.

Certainly - in the case of a resale then the buyer would want to look for a different contract. But as LisaS pointed out there is no May UY so perhaps there wouldn't be a problem.

That's exactly what I was thinking but I didn't want to commit for fear of them blaming me later if their travel plans change. March is generally a good UY anyway, though.

If it's make or break on the deal, especially if it's BLT or AKV, the points for March are readily available and they'll find'em PDQ. :cool1:

Even if it no longer applies to the OP, I am curious as to what the answer would be to her original question. How are points allocated if you happen to travel at a time which overlaps when one UY ends and another begins? I've been researching DVC for about a year now and while I have an idea of the answer, I'm curious to hear what "those in the know" say. :goodvibes

You would pay for the nights that fall in one UY with points from that UY, and pay for the remaining nights with points from the next UY.

Ex: Let's say you have a June UY and want to book a stay for the last 3 nights in May 2009 and the first 2 nights in June 2009. You would pay for the 3 nights in May with Jun '08 points and the 2 nights in June with Jun '09 points.

If a reservation spans UYs, I believe that MS has to make multiple reservations. The first would be from checkin to the last day of the UY. The second would be from the 1st day of the next UY to the checkout date. They would link them together.

or you could bank your 08 points to 09 (just the points needs for this) - and use only 08 points.

don't think you need two reservations - just not sure about that one.

Yes, that is how it works. I have often had reservations that cross my June use year. Since the reservations are linked, no need to check-out and check-in.

Thanks to everyone for all the responses. I'll have to call my guide back today anyway, and I guess I'll ask about UY since I defintely wrote down May as being the start of our use years from the last conversation we had. I know he said we would be getting 2008 points, so I dont think the May date was waiting until kidani opens because he said we wouldn't get 2008 points at BLT since it's not open yet :confused3 Good to know how it works though if we ever do need to do a stay that happens to fall that way.
