So we have a cabana booked on Grand Cayman for our cruise next week. The current forecast for the next 10 days says there is a good chance it will be raining that day. :sad2:

What do you do? Bother going anyway because, gosh darn it, you spent that $100 for the cabana and you can't get it back?.... or do you say forget it, not worry about the $100 and just walk around town for a little while in the rain and then head back to the ship?

All thoughts appreciated!

Well, in reality, once you're in the cabana, you'll be out of the rain.

I guess, depending on how hard it's raining, I'd probably go anyway, if I was going to lose the money. Have you asked the policy there if the ship doesn't make port? Or if it's raining?

If the ship doesn't make port, there is no charge.... but I doubt rain would cause that. Storm, yes; rain, probably not.

But really, to sit on a beach in a cabana in the rain? What's the fun there? :confused3

Well, I figure, at the beach I'm going to get wet anyway. So, I'd probably just go ahead and go.

It might not rain the whole time so I would still go. Also, on the cruises we've been on they gave out free Disney Parks ponchos when it was raining so you may get a free parting gift. :)

Since Grand Cayman is a port where tendering is required, there is a good chance that you may not port there during a storm. They need pretty calm waters to tender safely. Unfortunately, we have only made it to Grand Cayman once out of three cruises so far.

Sounds like more fun than walking around in the rain and hanging out on the ship.

What hotel are you using for the cabana? We've got a day on GC coming up in October.

We visited Grand Cayman last October for a long weekend. On one of our days there we did encounter some rain but it did not last very long. It moved through quite quickly. We spent a day at Cemetery Beach ( free beach north of Georgetown) and the weather was sunny, clear and hot. Down in Georgetown, there was a wicked thunderstorm that was positioned right over the cruise ships. We were less than ten miles from Georgetown and the weather was drastically different in both locations.
Moral of the story, you could be walking around Georgetown in the rain or sitting on the beach in the sun. Or vice versa.

You're freaking me out a bit. I've been very much looking forward to Grand Cayman, and although I know there is always a chance weather could keep us out of a port, I hadn't heard about there being a particular problem with that one. What time of year do you usually go that bad weather has hit you twice?

We are using the Royal Palms (https://royalpalmscayman.com/

It costs $100 for the day for a cabana, a table, 4 chairs and 4 recliners.

Hope that helps....

Sorry, didn't mean to freak you out. I think it was just our bad luck with the weather. Our 2 cruises were in sept and oct.

That's hurricane season, right? We're in May, so I hope we're okay. It won't kill my whole trip to miss a port or anything, but I would be kind of sad. (We have made sure that our private excursions won't charge if the ship doesn't dock).

Don't fret just yet. Usually when I start watching weather 10 days before any vacations the forecast changes almost everyday.
Fingers crossed for you to have a beautiful day!

In April we were on Grand Cayman. THere was a lot of rain in the area. About 5 times you could see the "Wall Of Rain" less than 100 feet away --- never got rained on!!! But when we returned to the ship - you could tell that it had rained pretty hard on shore and on the ship! I would go. The temperature will be warm / hot. The ocean is great. The rain ... if any... can be keep you at a reasonable temperature.

I say ... "Go Forth and Have A Great Day"

You can see BOTH the Sun and the Rain Clouds in this pic from April

On our Jamaica day this past may it POURED for a good amount of the day, but then it got sunny. We had booked a "beach party" through the ship so we were stuck on the beach until the bus came to pick us up. Despite the rain it was a fun day. The hosts kept us busy. Our table mates had gone to a different beach party and had no issues with weather. The next day we had a glorious day with no rain and our table mates got rained on. The Caribbean weather is a funny thing.

There has been rain predicted on every tropical vacation I've ever been on, but I've never had more than a few minutes of rain. When the forecast says rain, it doesn't necessarily mean rain all day. If it rains for even a few seconds, it goes in the books as rain.
