This is purely one of those what if questions.

What happens if the ecomomy continues to fall and disney goes kaput?
I know it is far fetched but who ever thought GM and citi bank could be going under.

If DIsney corp were to go belly up
What happens to DVC.

Maybe more realistic question what happens if Disney closes some hotels where DVC is co- located what then?

Any idea how many DVC members default on loans?

What happens if the sky falls?

What happens if the earthquake knocks California out into the ocean?

What happens if I get hit by a truck tomorrow and die?

(Option three here is statistically the most likely)

I am sorry but I do think that these are fair questions.
Has anyone flown Pan am lately.
The markets are in a free fall.
Thousands are losing jobs.
Disney stock is taking a beating.Today it hit a low for the last year down over 50 percent.
Disney profits dive when people can not afford entertainmet or vacations.

Or should we not pay attention to the man behind the curtian?

Have you been talking with my DH? Please don't I want to add on at BLT.

In all honesty this "economic crisis" is more a matter of perception... I look at how bad the 70s and 30s were and think we are going to be okay..

Also, we have this about every 10 years... this is just a bigger one.

I don't think Disney is going anywhere...

I expected GM to fall a long time ago. Any company that operates under a deficet for this long should go under.. it is a bad business.

Citi got mixed up in stupid loans, shame on them. They knew it was bad banking but were greedy.

I doubt Disney will go "kaput".

I still owe on my DVC (Just bought) so if they do go under I wont be out much.... :)

I have to tell you I was very concerned about this (and still am) when we were buying and never got a straight answer. I actually had one cast member (yes a guide not ours though) tell my husband that I worry too much. He is lucky I did not throw my phone at the wall and never talk to DVC again.

Anyway, we never did a get a straight answer but we bought anyway.

Supposedly we "own" the property so technically it can not be affected by what happens to Disney. WE will see what happens.

Congratulations to anyone who actually gets an answer!:wizard:

I have worried about this too. Who would have thought AIG or ENRON would have issues? I would guess we are SOL if Disney goes belly up. Although I think that is VERY unlikely.

There were some condos that Donald Trump was going to build and now those people are out their $$$$. (their deposits of 10% I think it was a hundred grand to millons-- argh)

And Disney is a great marketer-- the parks are full with all those discounts...... I think we are OKay.

Some of us would miss you terribly! :)

I for one find all of the drama exhausting and prefer to spend my energy on things I can control or change.

If 'Disney goes under' some other company will retain the assets and some things may improve, some things may not be so nice.

I'm a "glass half full" type of person, so it never entered my mind. Not worried either. In times of economic hardship, entertainment is usually pretty high on the list for folks to continue doing. It helps them get through it. As long as Disney makes movies, there will be a Disney.

We own deeded property so there are specific Florida laws that covers what would happen if Disney were to file for bankruptcy.

My guess is that Disney would sell off some of their other 40 some businesses before they get rid of the Parks and Resorts.

Yeah, what they said. :thumbsup2

If something were to happen to the entity vaguely referred to as "Disney", our timeshare ownership would continue. We would still have a management company--perhaps called Disney Vacation Club or something else. The parks would almost certainly continue to operate whether they are owned by "Disney" or not.

I think a far more realistic possibility is that ownership of the parks and resorts will change sometime in the next 4-5 decades. It was barely 25 years ago that Disney was under serious assault from corporate raiders. If successful, the company would have been broken-up years ago. And much more recently a Comcast buyout bid sent people into the stratosphere with "what-if" scenarios.

Walt Disney World--as a whole--is a virtually priceless asset. I don't see us reaching a point where the gates of the Magic Kingdom are closed for financial reasons. Even in the event of bankruptcy WDW would be considered an asset and sold-off to relieve debts.

So the most likely upheaval would be some redistribution of Disney's assets which changes the fundamental structure we see today.

Another possibility is that events may occur which would leave us unable to access our vacation homes or even the surrounding area. As with Carol's earthquake analogy, it's not really something you can plan for. But probably a more realistic outcome than locks on the MK gates.

Ignore this man behind the curtain that you're worried about.

I have enough REAL stuff to worry about...I think just about every industry is hurting except like healthcare & utilities - stuff that people HAVE to have. Disney is not alone in their pain. But I'm not going to dwell on the future of the mouse. He will survive. I don't think we're done seeing our perks pulled & diminished...but personally I have more important things to wonder about than the entire demise of Disney. I just don't think it's a valid "what if".

(PS) Delta is still around....their pending pilot strike back in 2006 almost got them...but they made it.

I guess i will just sprinkle some pixie dust on my disney stock.

Actually, many of the posters who have replied on this thread are known for NOT dealing in 'pixie dust' or fantasy, but are very firmly routed in reality.

Tim, Carol and I certainly are not known for tossing around empty platitudes or hugging and kissing online. 'Warm and fuzzy' is most likely not the first description which comes to mind.... (with apologies to both of those posters, but I suspect that they too would prefer not to have that title!)

Well, if you're the keeper of the pixie dust and have some to sprinkle why don't you just take it on up to Wall Street & shower it all over the place? My Microsoft stock could use a dab too!:rotfl:

Previously you made reference to "[paying] attention to the man behind the curtian." The problem is there's so little we can really do.

If you're looking to evaluate the long-term viability of DVC, then (IMO) you need to separate Walt Disney World from The Walt Disney Company. If you think TWDC is going in the wrong direction then by all means sell your stock. TWDC stock may someday be worth as much as Enron or WorldCom stock.

But Walt Disney World is an asset, and a very lucrative one at that. We still have 12-15 million people per year walking thru the gates of the Magic Kingdom. If TWDC can't manage that asset, they will either sell it off or courts will force them to do so.

None of us can predict what the future may hold for Disney stock. But barring some natural or man-made disaster, WDW should continue to exist as home to 4 theme parks, 2 water parks and dozens of resort hotels for many years to come.

I simply was curious what whould happen to DVC if the ecomony continues to tank.
I was not looking to cause controversy.

I thought that someone would know what the outcome of such an event would be.
These boards have always provided excellent informatioon on all aspects of DVC.

I may be pessimisitic but I am worried about the ecomony and how it will affect my family and I when it comes to spending on vacations.

I did not think asking a fiscal question was inapproriate.

Yes the economy is terrible but I wonder how much the media plays into it? Would the market be better if we werent hearing everyday how BAD it is and taking our money out because of that?

Boom and Bust. We will boom again and forget all about these really sad days until it happens again...as sad as that is.

Citi stock rose 34 % sometime today. I don't know what its currently trading at, but the stock market rallied today.

Do not fret. The sky is not falling.
