What I don't understand weight wise

When you exercise you gain weight due to working out becuse you build muscle and that weighs more then fat but if I where do get on a scale say it would over weight even though the weight is in the muscle not the fat
 
Unless you're really muscular, most of your weight is likely still fat.

Yes, muscle weighs more than fat, but you'll know if that's something you should be taking into consideration. Working out doesn't automatically build muscle.

Because smart scales use BMI and BMI can be flawed when it comes to body composition.
 

Fat and muscle weighs the same. Just like a pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of lead. It's the amount of space each takes up that makes the difference since muscle is tighter and leaner compared to fat.

Well if you use that logic everything weighs the same because a pound of X will always weigh the same as a pound of y.

However in normal conversations if someone says X weighs more then Y it is understood that you mean either 1 unit of X weighs more then 1 unit of Y (As in my math textbook weighs more then my English textbook) or that the same volume of x will weigh more then the same volume of y (as in muscle weighs more than fat).
 
Gaining weight by adding muscle is extremely tough to do. You have to be a fanatic about the weights.

You do not "gain muscle" when you work out. Now you may strengthen your muscles when you work out but actually "gaining muscle" is not possible unless you are a body builder.

You can burn calories with working out which helps with weight loss.

Weight loss is calories in and calories out.

This is what ive been telling a friend of mine, but she doesnt believe me. She justifies her 5lb weight gain by saying 'it must be from muscle because I workout on the treadmill now'. Ummm, ok. :rolleyes:
 
My friend and I are both counting calories. He is much leaner than I...but I am loosing more weight every week. Here is the difference. He is loosing inches. He is more active. So, it's not always in pounds...it's best to measure as well. Hope this helps. Weight loss is always a struggle....especially at Disney. I'm going in November and plan on eating whatever I like....with some moderation....but not a whole lot. But....as soon as I get back....onto the plan! Best of Luck!

I don't understand what this means. Any exercise you do that "strengthens your muscles" causes your muscles to tear slightly and rebuild denser than before. You are gaining muscle. You just won't like 70's Arnold Schwarzenegger

When you are just doing basic exercise you are strengthening those muscles, which is not a "gain".

If you are heavy lifting 3 times a week, let's say, your muscles will become denser, toned, defined but that is still not a "gain". You are just working the unused muscles you already have, esp. in women.

"Gain" is when you are already are ripped and you tear and rebuild on top of that. That involves "bulking" and all that jazz.

It is really just a play on words here, I hope that makes sense.

Schwarzenegger basically did "strong lifts 5X5", with a lot of steriods I am sure.
