what happens to cancelled points?

do they NEED to be used in the current use yr? I thought they did but while on the phone the other day I believe I was told they could still get rolled over to next yr?
Thinking of cutting off the last Fri night - driving to MILs 45mins away after a park day

It depends on when you cancel and where you are in you banking window. Also you can NOT bank borrowed points.
It you cancel more than 30 days before the points were to be used, AND you are with in a banking window. Then you can bank them.

If you cancel and are within 30 days of the original reservation, the points will go into a "holding Account" where you can only book a reservation 60 days or less before you plan to use them. Also the points must be used with in the current use year. Hope this helps.

So I can call to cancel that Fri night and they will just be returned to this yr?
and then if not used (not planning on) they can be rolled to next yr by end of Nov?

You can also ask them to reallocate the points if that Friday was booked with borrowed points. In other words, MS can rearrange the points to make sure that the borrowed points get used this year, and then you can bank the left over points into next year. Try really hard not to cancel in 30 days or less, though, because points in holding can be a bear to use in the current year, especially since you can only use them within 60 days of check-in.
