I made my first dis t-shirt and followed the directions exactly from "20 steps to make a shirt" and did the vinegar wash. My dgd wore it and I washed it. When it came out, the transfer was all krinkly like it had been washed dozens of times. What happened?

I don't know what happened.:confused3 Bumping in case someone else can help...

I've never done the vinegar wash.:confused3

Did you dry it in the dryer on low? Perhaps the dryer heat was too high?

Some transfers say on the package that after you wash it, you can iron right on the transfer. Check your transfers. Is it something that could iron out? If your transfers don't say that, maybe you could put a pillow case or something over it and try to iron it out?

That stinks that that happened... :(

Did you use a dark or light transfer??

I noticed w/the shirts we made last year, ALL the light transfers did that but none of the dark ones did.

My dryer only has one setting (high), I used light transfer paper, and ironing doesn't help. Does light or dark transfers refer to the color of the shirt or the color of the ink on the transfer?

It refers to the color of the shirt. If you were to use a dark transfer it's supposed to be on a dark colored shirt. HOWEVER, I use dark transfers for everything, even if I'm putting the design on a white shirt. I just think they hold up better. The only difference is you have the color white on any part of the design that isn't trimmed or colored. So I'll just have to trim my designs well..........

The dark and light refers to the color of the shirt but many Disers here seem to prefer the dark ones. From what I have read they seem to hold up more. You can use the dark on any color shirt including light colored shirts. My DSIL made a couple and had a similar problem with cracking after one washing. I read that fabric softner is a no no with the transfers and she uses both liquid and dryer sheets. I can't use any fabric softner on anything due to my youngest son's sensitive skin and I have washed some t-shirts more than once (made with light Avery) and they still look nice- did you use fabric softner? I also turn inside out to wash!

I did not use any fabric softner and I turned it wrong side out. I guees I'll try again with dark transfer paper and see what happens. Thanks everyone:goodvibes

I wrote the directions in 20 steps based on my own personal experience. I'm so sorry you had that experience; geI've washed my various shirts AT LEAST 4x now (some even more). I've had 4 transfer designs crack on tees (3 out of 4 transfers were the LIGHT AVERY brand; the ts were all turned inside out... not sure if they were in a hotter part of a commercial dryer during the initial vinegar wash or if the Avery transfers were defective or if I did something wrong). I had about 15-20 shirts in that dryer load; all other shirts were fine. And, I have done more than 70 tees now; the others were fine....... Personally, I've had resounding success with the HP dark transfers.

Just curious, what brand transfers did you use?

I used Transfer Magic, but I think I'll go buy some HP next time.

Hi Guys
not that I'm a pro but I wasted alot of t-shirts yesterday,,,I think I found a few answers to my problem which were

I used 100% cotton --- the fabric with both cotton and polyester was ok

iron was not hot enough --worked best on highest setting

Avery transfers curled when cut yet new pkg ones I bought today didn't which leads me to believe that yesterdays were OLD.

100 % cotton cracked after washing and drying .

Just my thoughts

90% of my tees were 100% cotton; less than a handful cracked - 3 out of 4 were Avery light transfers. So I can't concur on the 100% cotton being the problem. About 62 tees still doing fine since being used in Disney in early May and frequently since then... including the 54 that are 100% cotton.

Re ironing, I did wonder that on 2 of the 4 myself.
