What happened to our book thread?

Help me out please........I don't know what the cheering is all about.

I am half way thru Night Circus and am struggling to continue......:confused3:confused3:confused3

What am I missing? Should I finish it? Really hate to quit a book but this is really dragging........

Thanks

I liked Night Circus. Didn't love it. Didn't get the furor over the book but it was enjoyable enough. OTOH, my mother hated it. We have similar tastes so I was surprised. Like you, she struggled to finish the book. I have found that with this book it's a real love it, hate it thing.

I'm finishing up "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving.

I'm considering picking up a Stephen King novel. I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether it should be "The Stand," "11/22/63" or "The Long Walk." I'm sure a lot of people have other favorites but that's my short list. :goodvibes

The Stand!

Grrrr... I have been waiting for this ebook all summer on Overdrive. I was originally 278 in line. Book became available for me over this past weekend and you have 48 hours to check it out with your library card # (and my card was on my desk at work!) By the time Monday rolled around, the time had expired. I had to jump back into line - I'm now 297, arg!

I might as well just fork out the $12.99 and buy the stupid book, lol.

:rotfl: I agree, I would never have the patience to wait to read a book. If I want to read something, I just buy it.

The Stand!

I loved that book! Another good one is 'Swan Song' by Robert McCammon. Although it has been criticized as being too similar to The Stand, it is a good book in its own right and well worth reading. Actually, I think I prefer it to The Stand, although it's been a while since I've read either one.

I would never be able to pick a favorite Stephen King novel, lol. Of the three you mentioned I would read:
The Long Walk----I did not know this was released in a stand alone book, when I read it, it was in a book of short stories. It is really good & IMHO would make a great movie for those who like Hunger Games type movies.

The Stand-----I've reread The Stand many times & could possibly be my favorite King novel--after The Dark Tower series tho.

11/22/63----Good but I don't think I would reread it.

Went and added Swan Song to my wish list. Sounds great! I love apocalyptic reads ;)

Me too! I just started The Strain after a recommendation on here. I'm about 49% through and really liking it. It was a little slow in the beginning but now it's really moving

I loved it. Hard to get past the very 1st of the book, but it ends up playing such an important part in the trilogy :)

Im reading another Gillian Flynn book, called Sharp Objects, it was the first of 3 Novels she has written. She so keeps my interest, from this point on, if she writes it, Im reading it

I finished "The Venetian Betrayal" this weekend, and really enjoyed it!

Now, I'm reading the second book in "The Beyonder" series. My daughter really liked it, and I love having things to talk to her about!

After that, I've got a couple of Amish books by Beverly Lewis to get through on a friend's recommendation, and then it will be on to "A Storm of Swords". I'm so excited to continue reading this series. I'm using it as a reward to finish up the books that need to go back to the library soon.

Glad to find this thread and I am hopping in. I'm always on the look out for good books and it looks like Gone Girl will be added to my list along with several others. THANKS!

I usually have 3 or 4 books going at one time; 1 or 2 regular books, one on the kindle and an audio in the car.

Someone mentioned Iron House..I didnt like it! LOVED The Last Child but just couldnt get into Iron House.

I just finished Noah's Compass by Anne Tyler. Both DH and I listened to it this past weekend on a car trip. At the end we were both scratching our heads saying what was the point? :confused3 :lmao:

Now for ones I really liked this summer. Unbroken (Laura Hillenbrand) really good and I learned a lot from it.

Defending Jacob (William Landay)

Half Broke Horses and The Glass Castle (both by Jeannette Walls)

I'm trying to re read Little Women because my DD just played Meg in the opera but it keeps getting pushed aside.

Also currently reading Death Benefits by Robin Cook and Wild Fire by Nelson DeMille.

And I'm picking up The Book Thief tomorrow at the library.

Has anyone read The Yellow Crocus?

I did and I really enjoyed it. It was hard to put down, reminds me alot of The Help..different era of course but same kind of premise. I would recommend it

I just finished A Secret Kept by Tatiana de Rosnay. It was ok. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood. I read Sarah's Key over the summer and really enjoyed that one

Great thanks! I absolutely loved The Help and was told that I would love The Kitchen House which I did. So I've been looking for something else like that.

I think Yellow Crocuses is a lot more like The Kitchen House than The Help, but it's not as good as either. It's good, not great. JMO!

I just read through all 15 pages of this thread and now I'm inspired to go revive the book review blog that I started in January and have let lapse over the last several months. So thanks for that!

Someone upthread asked about Delirium - I LOVED this book! I really need to get my hands on Pandemonium.

Other YA books I've loved recently:
Divergent
Hunger Games trilogy
Gone series

I read Gone Girl recently and absolutely loved it - and I disagree with the statement that the ending is a cop-out. Disturbing, yes, but in a way that I felt really matched the tone of the rest of the book.

Sharp Objects (same author) was good also, though not quite up to the level of Gone Girl. Gone Girl kept me on the edge of my seat more, and definitely had some plot twists I didn't see coming.

The Night Strangers - also disturbing but excellent.

I really liked Island of Lost Girls also.

After seeing a preview for Life of Pi I'm somewhat intrigued by that one, and I've been wanting to read The Night Circus forever! No matter how many books I read, my TBR pile just gets bigger and bigger!!
