What happened in Ft. Lauderdale?

In the latest issue of The Advocate there is an ad by the Fort Lauderdale visitore bureau. It reads:

Dear Friends,
The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau wishes to thank the GLBT community for its continuous friendship and support.

Your loyalty and goodwill are especially appreciated at a time when our welcoming and inclusive reputation has been publicly challenged. We remain committed to the GLBT traveler and local gay community, and are very distressed by recent local events which do not reflect the opinions or beliefs of our respectful destination.

Now more than ever before, we hope that you will come experience our sunny shores and warm welcomes for yourself.


Me again... so, does anyone know what happened in Ft. Lauderdale recently that would generate such an ad? I tried to google it, but couldn't find anything.

I love Ft. Lauderdale and grew up down there, and I have to say this is by far the worst mayor they've had. It won't keep me from going back to visit though.
