What Frugal Action Did You Take Today!?

To follow my last thread, I am wondering if you did anything that you consider frugal today?

My daughter and son in law got take out Japanese and chicken for the boys. They wanted to buy me dinner, as I am babysitting for them in a bit. I said, 'no thanks, I'll make something here!'

Feels like a victory step toward a more frugal lifestyle!! I'm tryin' here!

I went to Safeway to pickup some sale items - whole chickens for .99lb - made each one around $5 so I got 6 of those. That's 1 per week plus I'm making soup with the leftovers. And they had store brand Spumoni icecream marked down to .99 so I picked up 2 of those.

I consider Saturday "baking day" at my house - so I made a batch of pancakes and waffles which I freeze and reheat for the kids breakfast during the week. Also made a batch of choc chip cookies and a cake for snacks. Much cheaper for me to make all that at home than buy premade.

Well I don't know if this really counts but..my DD and I went to the mall today. I wanted to stop in my favorite store Christopher & Banks to see if they had any winter sweaters on sale for next year. I need to update my wardrobe badly. OMG I hit the jackpot, they had two rounders of things priced $5 each. I got 12 things for 60 bucks. I love that store:lovestruc

Had a few free hours with no kids. I was thinking about going to the movie theater with dh (its been about 4 years) after seeing the ticket prices we went and got 3 movies at redbox for $3.00

Ok, the men in my house were out of shower gel. So I went to Target, got the shower gel on sale, combined it with a Target coupon AND a manufactures coupon to get it for FREE. I did another round (fairly same item) and used a BOGO coupon as well.

Instead of going out to eat, we picked up some quick entrees from Trader Joe's at a fraction of the cost it would be to go out to eat.

We also looked for beds fro my over six foot tall son.. the first place we looked had floor samples in one corner of the store.. that is the first place we looked!

Well, I was going to pick up pizzas on my way home from errands tonight. I got 1/2 way to walmart called hubby and said....cook pasta, he asked what you don't want pizza. I said nope don't need to spend $30 on 2 pizzas, we have pasta and sauce in the kitchen. :thumbsup2

I didn't go out!! :) I was going to go to Target for a "few things" but decided I'd spend $100+ on stuff I don't want or need! So I stayed home...and didn't shop online either!! LOL I had DH stop at the store w/ my short list instead. He sticks to it..where I never can! So I saved about $80 by not leaving my house! :rotfl2:

Bought marked down (.50) bread at the store. It expires in two days, but we'll probably eat it by then or a day after.

Made sure I turned off all the lights that I wasn't using.

Bought 2 used books today rather than new! I usually read library books but I don't like to take them on vacation with me in case I lose them. So I got 2 new-to-me books. I also hit the thrift store looking for some bargains on spring clothes but didn't find anything. Avoided Walmart so I wouldn't buy anything!

Cooked all meals at home on Friday and Saturday.

Dog would like a bed (he's been using a blanket that I left on the floor and need for picnics) so instead of buying one, I'll use an old blanket and wrap it over a pillow.

Went back to Kohl's and got a price adjustment because I got a 30% off code. One item was a coat for DD-9 that I saved $18 on because of that code.

We are finishing our unfinished basement ourselves.....more work done today!

We were going to spend the day in, but then friends called and asked us to go out. We said sure, and we got all ready, but then they had to turn around cause of weather (they are about an hour from here, here it was fine.) Since we were all realy dressed and all, hubby and I went out. We went to lunch instead of dinner and had the special and went to the Dollar theater instead of the regualr movies. OK, it would have been cheaper to not go, but anyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with dates with my hubby. The more the better. So I was happy to go with him.

Traded some coupons I didn't need for Amazon baby codes that I will use to get diapers for my BIL...

Well, it would have been more frugal not to spend any money. However, while I was out buying the clearanced flip cam, I stopped in Target. Their dollar spot stuff was 75% off so I bought 6 5x7 pic frames to use as favors for DD's bday party. They are .25, bright pink & say Friends on the top. We can take some pics, print them at Walgreen's & fill it w/a collage pic for each girl.

They also had a door hanger organizer that was .60. We'll use that on our trip & if it doesn't survive the trip, that's ok.

I picked up & put back 2 of the $9 movies so I consider that a success. I ended up spending $4 because I bought some v-day candy too.

I didn't stop for any fast food while we were out today.

I stayed out of the stores except for a quick run into Sears to buy the dishwasher we needed, not necessarily a frugal purchase there! But it was 30% off and I did get 5x the Sears points for it which is why I went to get it today.

It was our turn to bring snacks for the kids' game so I managed to find plenty here at the house isn't of doing a snack run.

I also made a list of what we have in the pantry and freezers so I can figure out meals and what I really need to buy to fill in the gaps.

It wasn't today but yesterday I resisted buying the very nice patio set for the killer price that I *really* wanted but really didn't need. That one was hard and at least it went out of stock so I don't have to worry about giving into temptation! LOL

Well, we stayed home today since it was too cold and rainy to go outside! The only money we spent was to pay all of our outstanding bills online, including Mastercard which we paid in full with no interest. There's still plenty left in the checking account with two more paychecks coming in at the end of the month.

We're just coming off a 20-month period of unemployment for my DH. He started his new job in January. I will say that even though it was painful, there was one aspect of his unemployment that helped us. We got a lot more serious about trying to save money. We changed phone carriers and bundled it with our cable/internet company to save $70 a month. We aggressively pursued a re-fi on our house which saved $350 a month. We also became much more careful about shopping and are putting more thought into what we buy. Now that the money is coming in again, we're continuing with our new habits and we feel much better about things.

I needed to return some things by mail to Old Navy. was going to print their return label where they would have charged me $6.00. I instead went to Rite Aid bought 5 manilla envelopes for $1.99 and then mailed it myself for $3.09. a small savings, but a savings none the less.

Wow! I am truly impressed! I can really use a lot of the ideas listed here! I am on the 'no buy thread' and have found that staying out of the stores, has helped tremendously!! I also find that if I am going grocery shopping, I do better if I shop at a grocery store, vs a superstore, or I get my frozen items before I go to another part of the store. After all, I don't want them to get warm or thaw!

The hardest part has been passing up the toy sales. I found that last year I bought things early and the boys tastes changed a lot, prior to Christmas. This year I will wait until black Friday, in less there is something I am sure they will like!

I went shopping with a friend to help her pick out her Mardi Gras dress for a ball we are all going to next weekend. I am borrowing a dress from a friend and even though were lots of fabulous dresses there, I did not buy one.
