That people cannot spell, and it is really annoying!!!

The spelling mistakes on FB are atrocious. I mostly noticed them in the quizzes that are made up by other members. I "assume" they are teenagers, and that makes me sad. I guess it would be sadder if it were adults making these mistakes. (I am sure some of them are adults)

I work with teenagers, and I have a few co-workers on my friends list. Plus my own nieces and nephews, so I have enough teens on my friends list to know that this is a HUGE problem. One co-worker is in her 20's and she can't spell even the most basic words. I want to pull my hair out and scream.

My niece took a quiz that was riddled with spelling mistakes. So I commented on her results. I made a joke about the spelling, and she posted back, joking about the spelling, yet her spelling was just as bad.

I would like to live in a box, where I can't see the whole world, and how "dumbed-down" we really have become.

Facebook has taught me that I am really annoyed when people type "prolly" when what they mean is "probably". I see it on other message boards as well. If it was just the one word, it wouldn't be that bad. But once I see "prolly", I can usually make an accurate guess that the rest of their spelling and grammar will be equally atrocious. Does that mean that I am judgmental? Absolutely. Is it wrong? Maybe, maybe not. It's my problem to deal with. Flame away.

My BIL and my preacher are both dyslexic as well. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I have found, at least in those two cases, that they can still express themselves rather well, even in writing. What I mean is, the spelling may be off, but the rest of the sentence structures are still pretty accurate with a few exceptions. I realize I only have two examples to look at so it isn't a fair assessment.

#2) I don't see how the internet connection would have anything to do with it since your message isn't relayed until AFTER you type it and click SUBMIT.--->It depends on how the page for entry loads. If one doesn't go back and proofread, then the errors will be posted. A messageboard is for casual conversation its a little excessive to make those sorts of demands.

#3) I've been on the internet since 1992 and I've never seen a copy of the Cardinal Rules. -----> Wow 1992! Welcome newbie.

#4) I ended my post with a winking emoticon, meaning my post was done TONGUE IN CHEEK. ----> It doesn't change the content.

#5) You have arthritis (and I'm not making fun of that, honestly), but I have a big hairy cat butt laying across my arms while I type. I still make the effort to read before I click and edit where necessary. ------>As I said in my original post its a casual conversation. I'm not going to take the same care I do for a work related memo.

My 15yo DS gets frustrated with me because I tell him which words he misspelled on Facebook.....I think he regrets friending me!

It is very sad, and seems to be a nationwide problem.

Where in the following statement does she say that? It seems to me that she was blaming the Facebook application for her typos and misspellings.

If everyone used Firefox we wouldn't have to worry about trying to blame Facebook for our spelling errors. (I can type over 100 words per minute and have never had any troubles with it spelling my stuff wrong and any errors are due to my laziness). Firefox has a built in spell checker so you can see if you've made an error or not.

No, it would be funny if she/he had complained about spelling errors and her/his post was filled with them. She/he simply mentioned how easy it was to make mistakes. It was in no way funny at all. The situation was not funny, it has nothing to do with my sense of humour.

I've learned THE HARD WAY not to mention when I will be out of town ~ seems someone came into the house and helped themselves to my new netbook and DD's Ipod after I was stupid enough to let my friends know that I was going to Boston to see a concert. Live and Learn.

I have never been able to spell... even in 5th grade I failed spelling. Didn't matter how much time my parents spent with me on spelling words I just could not get it. Luckily I use firefox and leave the spell check on. Otherwise, who knows what my posts would look like!

Personally, I love facebook. I moved after high school, many of my friends moved after college, and I have many friends around the world that I have met online. I LOVE the ability to know what is going on with anyone... even if they live in Canada.

One of my best friends (now deceased) had dyslexia and couldn't spell some of the most basic words. If you saw him write a letter, you'd think he was slow. On the contrary, he had a super high IQ, was gifted, and was the most brilliant person I've ever met in my life. We used to play these alliteration games (making up sentences with all the same letters) and he would make the longest, most complex sentences with big words. He put me to shame with his vocabulary and I have a degree in English.

My husband, son and daughter are poor spellers too. Son is very bright and my husband is high IQ and highly intelligent.

Me, I can spell any word you throw at me, but I can't do more than basic math. People don't judge my intelligence on that because they can't see the disability.

Anyway, my point is with my loved ones, I learned never to judge a person's intelligence on their spelling. Some people just *can't* spell properly. I would give anything in the world for just one more silly, poorly written letter from my friend.

Go to settings at top of page. Go to privacy, then got to profile, then from that page you can control what all can see. Go to status and links.. hit customize and add his name as someone to block from seeing your status etc .

When we look at the careless spelling, punctuation, and needless abbreviations that take place so often with texting and social networking, it's easy just to say that this represents the weak writing skills of our young people.

However, I read an interesting article this weekend that discussed that, actually, the opposite is the case. Consider that because of the way we now communicate electronically, we now have more opportunities than ever to write for an audience. That's a big deal. To you adults 30+, when did your writing ever matter, outside of getting a grade in school? If you did not have a career that required heavy writing skills, it's quite possible that you had only ever written to an audience of one or two (maybe a teacher, maybe a single letter recipient).

We adults might kind of chuckle at the FB or MySpace drama that goes on with the teenagers, but think about it. It all happens because someone published something...in writing... and can almost immediately gain feedback and view (and perhaps suffer) the effects of the words that they chose. They are directly learning how to craft their words to elicit the response they want.

Of course, blurbs on social networking sites are just the beginning. There are reviews and blogs to be written, emails, notes, etc. The opportunities for young people to write (with feedback) today are endless. AND, almost every single one of them take advantage of those opportunities on a daily basis.

I would like to see punctuation and spelling not go by the wayside. Don't know the answer to that one. But the art of writing, I believe, is alive and well...moreso than ever....thanks to the internet.

I learned that when someone is whipped into a frenzy over H1N1, no good can come from trying to be logical with them about basic precautions (i.e. handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, get the flu shots, call the doc at first sign of illness.)

My daughter who is an A student cannot spell. I cannot spell. I have a Masters degree. I do my best but sometimes, the spelling is just not right! Sorry, I guess, despite my degrees, I am "dumb". I don't know how I got this far in life not knowing how to spell.

I am sad for my daughter. Her future looks hopeless. I will disregard what her teachers say about her future and just focus on her lack of spelling ability. Who cares about spell check and all her other strengths.

By the way, punctuation counts just as much as spelling. Your inability to edit your work makes me wonder why you are so concerned with others weaknesses when you have one yourself.
