What exactly IS cocktail attire?

One of my friends is throwing a "mocktail" party since none of us are old enough to drink. On the invite it said "cocktail attire" but after that we'll be having normal girly sleepover things.

I don't think I OWN any cocktail attire. Does it have to be, like, a dress or something? Or can it be "Band Concert Casual?" <--nice pants, good shirt, etc. (no jeans, sneakers, tee shirts, or anything of the like)

TIA!

As long as you take a small umbrella, you're golden ;)

I always thought it meant something partyish-bar-ish but not trashy. (i.e. no hoochy skirts or pants).

That probably makes absolutley no sense.

I like to think of it as the dress up version of business casual, but not something I would wear to the office.

Buy a tshirt and stencil a martini glass on it.

Cocktail attire is fun!

The little black dress is classic, but any cute, killer little dress will work!

Since it is mocktail--shouldn't it be a Shirley Temple Glass?

Oops - shouldn't contribute to the delinquency of the young.

I agree with the others - a cute dress and heels is perfect.

Or you could do what I'm doing for my husband's 20th HS reunion. The attire was - get this - casual to semi-formal and then it went on to say: (where whatever you want). Talk about making it difficult!

So, I'm wearing white cropped pants (knee length) from Banana Republic that have a sheen to them, a form-fitting black top, a silver, metal belt over it and black wedges.

If they don't like it, they can stuff it. :teeth:

I would wear a tasteful dress, nice spagehetti straps or maybe strapless depending on how well you can hold it up, that falls just above knee length or a little lower. Black is always eloquent but red really catches the eye :thumbsup2 Nice heals, tasteful jewlery and maybe twist your hair up. Have fun :goodvibes

starring William Powell and Jean Arthur:

WP: 'What is a cocktail dress?'
JA: 'Something to spill cocktails on!' :teeth:

I have to wear Wife Clothes. :furious: More than anything in my life, I miss the flirty clothes.

The purpose of a cocktail party is to loosen everyone up with alcohol and let them have fun. Most women aren't sure WHAT to wear for such an occasion, so you get a bunch of HollyGoLightlies in their Little Black Dresses. :)

You get to dress a little sexier for cocktail parties than most occasions (unless you're married to my husband, which you aren't!) If you've got it, flaunt it! A little flaunt, not a trashy, skanky flaunt. If Janet Jackson would wear it, you shouldn't. Of course, if Aunt Bea would wear it, that's out, too. :)

Anything fun and flirty, but still EVENING is OK. Man, I wish I were young again.

Had to laugh... all I could think of was GILLMORE GIRLS :lmao:

So, I'm curious too. I don't mean to thread-jack (sorry  ) but I am going to V&A's in three weeks for my 20th wedding anniversary. I got married young so I am ONLY (uh huh - that is me trying to convince myself that I'm not old :lmao: ) 40. Can I wear this dress?

Is it a cocktail dress? I just ordered it so I really don't know what it will look like on. If you notice my tag, I'm a little worried about how low cut it is but I thought it was worth a try.

So, is it a cocktail dress? Is it dressy enough for V&A's? Oh heck. Maybe I should just wear a black t-shirt with a martini glass stenciled on it!!!

WOW! Now, THAT's a cocktail dress!!

Definitely nice enough for V&A's. Nice enough for a cocktail party. Nice enough to wear to a wedding.

BEAUTIFUL!

BTW, I'll be 40 this year, too. We're both YOUNG!

I think that dress is absolutely beautiful, not to mention classy. It is perfect for V&A's. :thumbsup2
