What exactly is a Vegan?

For future rice krispy treat reference: I use 'marshmallow fluff' in mine and they come out SO GOOOOOOOD, and no gelatin. They are a little softer than regular krispy treats (the ones w/ marshmallows tend to be stiffer), but that doesn't bother me, I still love them.

- they still aren't vegan though.

tricia.

What a great idea! How much fluff do you use? Do you have a recipe? One thing I like about the store bought is that they are softer so I bet I would like them made with the fluff (and I have SO much fluff since I stocked up when it was on sale :rotfl: ). Sorry to get so excited....I'm a cheap date. :teeth:

My daughter has decided to be a vegetarian, and she is only 5!

It all started on Presidents day when I took her to the Santa Barbara Zoo and then dinner at the SB Shellfish Company. She was excited about eating a crab up until she saw them pick it out of the tank and toss it in the water. She had been uneasy about eating meat since, but continued to, until Sunday when I served Salmon. She just imagined her goldfish and would only eat the salad and rice.

Last night at the grocery store when I went to get the Turkey for her sandwiches she said no, I don't want it, I don't want an animal to die. She looked so heartbroken and sad. So in the middle of the bakery dept we talked about eating meat and eggs and drinking milk and her main concern was animals dying. I told her she was a vegetarian, so I guess I will be one too.

I know this is a vegan thread, but can anyone recommend websites with recipes and ideas for us as lacto-ovo vegetarians. I have been googling inbetween work stuff, and would appreciate all the extra help I can get.

So you know, Marshmellow fluff is made with egg whites (off limit for us.)

Eating can be so gosh darn difficult sometimes!

I did say it's not vegan.

I make mine with a small jar of marshmallow fluff (they come in large and small, I use small), 1/2 stick of butter melted, and 5 cups of rice crispies.

Melt the butter and fluff in a pot, add the rice crispies and scoop it into a dish (i use a casserole - like a lasagna dish, whatever that is called). Let it cool and you're set! mmm. I just made those last week! I also put peanutbutter chocolate swirl chips in it which was really good too.

I'll have to try that! Do you know how many ounces is in a small jar of fluff? I have a BIG container of fluff. I could make enough for the neighborhood, if I had enough Rice Krispies. :teeth:

My DH will really laugh at me for learning a variation for rice krispy treats from the DIS boards. LOL

www.vegetariantimes.com has lots of great recipes--they haven't failed me yet! It's also a great magazine for new veggies.

Get some books, too.

Good luck to you both! I'm glad you're being so supportive of your daughter in this, even at such a young age.
:thumbsup2

By the way, the recipe search on the VT website is funny; I typed in "thanksgiving" last november and got a big list of dishes! :rotfl:

sorry, I knew you said it wasn't vegan. I just was saying the egg whites are in there, they are not in normal marshmellows. I even called kraft on it because my dietistion said there was eggs in marshmelows.

Tigger: I believe a small jar has 7.5 oz. if I am correct. There is also a recipe on marshmallowfluff.com but theirs I believe is a bit too buttery. I do it with 1/2 the butter they use.

I know you asked for recipes for lacto-ovo vegetarians but even if you and your child are only are lacto-ovo these Vegan sites can help you. Sure its all Vegan stuff but many lacto-ovo eat a lot of Vegan food and in fact many meat-eaters eat a lot of Vegan food.

Vegetarians do not eat fish. At least, not the real vegetarians. There are posers out there. :rotfl:

As my Vegan nephew likes to say, and I quote, "If it's got a face, then I don't eat it!"
