What exactly does "Within 1 day" mean in terms of cancellation fees?

I'm getting technical here I know, but wondering what constitutes "within 1 day of reservation" for cancellation fees?

An old post mentioned that you have until 11:59 p.m. the night before your reservation to cancel without penalty. However, I'm not seeing that in the cancellation policy on the dining reservation and wonder if within 1 day = 24 hours advance notice required instead?

TIA for any info... :)

According to the Restaurant FAQs on Disney's website you have until 11:59 PM the night before to cancel. The dining phone line closes earlier, but you can cancel until 11:59 PM online. I've never had any problem if I cancelled by that time.

From Disney's website under the Restaurant FAQs:
https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/dining-reservations/restaurant-reservation-cancellation/

Some events or restaurants (e.g. the 3 dinner shows, CRT, Wishes Dessert Party) have a different cancellation deadline so be sure to read the details when making reservations.

I just remembered, there is also a dedicated dining reservation cancellation phone number: WDW-CNCL, but I don't know its hours.

When we were there we were told by the CL concierge that we needed to cancel by 11pm the night before. I assume because that's when the phone lines close. Not sure about doing it online up to midnight though.

So a breakfast ressie for 8 am on a Saturday could be cancelled online at 11pm on Friday and no fee will be imposed? Thats much less than 24 hours, but a nice option if so.

Just a heads up. I forgot to cancel a ressie and called 15 minutes before and they said i could just change the reservation to another day, which i did and then just cancelled the new reservation the night before (as far as I know I wasn't' charged for the cancellation) just a way around if something comes up and you can't make your ressie.

Yes, that's how it works. Definitely nice for the guest, but defeats the whole purpose of the $10 fine and rigmarole - disney definitely ends up with short notice of available space in those cases.
