Discovery Island and River Country? I've not been in a number of years and I used to take a boat from the Contemporary Resort to a place called Discovery Island and I also went to a small water park located at Ft. Wilderness called River Country, are these not around any more, I searched for them and did not come up with anything. I must be old school.

river country was closed in favor of the other water parks. you'll get different reasons depending on who you ask, but i fully blame the killer amoeba.

discovery island was just a flop. and had its own share of problems. JHM had the rumor mill going that it would be turned into an attraction based on LOST.

an attraction based on Lost, a pirate island, an exclusive honeymoon suite, private villas, there have been a few rumors about what they might do with the original Discovery Island... all speculation. When the hurricane came though, it did not treat that little island well, and repairs were never made.

River Country closed a little after 9/11. Park attendance dropped and I am guessing they didn't need 3 water parks open. I had a lot of fun at River Country as a child. The other parks offer bigger and better attractions but it's proximity to the MK resorts was really nice.

Discovery Island closed shortly after AK opened. Some of the animals went to AK and some to other zoological organizations. In the UG Inside Disney book it mentioned that there have been lots of different ideas for the area including an immersive Pirate's Treasure hunt. (Although that book is now 6 years old and that hasn't happened yet.)

Anyone else hear about what might happen with Discovery Island in the future?

Where exactly was Discovery Island located. I remember going there on a WDW trip in 1993 when I was 13. I remember taking a boat there and seeing all these birds, I have pics of flamingos. Was there a water park there too, becasue I rememer going to a water park and I thought it was on Discovery Island. I was always curious about where this place was and what happened to it since it's hard to find info on it now.

The island is directly off shore from Contemporary Resort in Bay Lake.

Thanks for all the replies. I had no interest to ever going to Discovery Island again, once was enough. River Country was fun, though, it was small compared to the other water parks and pretty laid back.
