What does it mean...

When you become a vacation club member you buy a specific amount of points. You use the points for stays. How many points you will need depends on the time of year, how many nights you want to stay and accommodations you use.

If you want to stay at a DVC resort you can buy points from members. There is a calculator that determines how many points you will need depending on what type of accommodations you want.

You buy points when you buy into Disney Vacation Club. Then, you can decide when you want to travel, and what type of room, and at which DVC resort. The number of points you use for each trip is determined by what time of year you go, what type of accomodations you want. So...if a DVC member isn't going to use their points for that year, they will lose them. What they will do is 'rent' the points out to someone for a set amount of money per point. They usually would make the reservation. If you go over to the DVC boards and check in the Rent board you can get some pretty good info. People have saved a lot of money doing it this way.

Just to add a little to what's already been posted.....the benefit of renting points from a DVC member instead of paying cash to book directly from Disney is that it can cost you much less $$ for your stay if staying at one of the DVC resorts;)

For example, a stay in a studio room (larger than most regular hotel rooms and comes with a kitchenette) it may cost you say $300 per night to book directly through Disney and would come out to $1,500 for a 5 night stay. If you rent points from a DVC member, it would cost you typically $10 per point and the stay for 5 nights if you stay Sun. - Thurs. would cost you 40 points for a studio at OKW if you went in Sept.(lowest point cost season)-- the cost for 40 points would be $400 so you'd be saving $1,100

HTH's explain it a little;)

Just beware that once you rent points you may end up like we did and end up liking it so much you buy. :earsboy:

The term "rent points" is a misnomer. As a non-DVC member, the points are worthless to you. What you actually rent is a reservation that the member makes for you with those points.

If you decide to rent a reservation from a DVC member, make sure you check out the FAQs on the Rent/Trade Board. There are a lot of restrictions, plus it takes a lot of good faith to make it work.
