What does ftw mean

Hmmm, to me it means Fort Wilderness. But I'm guessing the texts aren't about WDW.

Yeah, I've been seeing FML all over facebook lately. Nice ...

It's not new - there's a very funny FML website.

I don't think the world is coming to an end because the f word is being thrown around more than it used to.

I must be pretty awful because I guessed what it means from the context one of the first times I saw it :rotfl: . I have a lot of teenagers as FB friends (friends of my kids, they always request me and then post everything that crosses their mind. It strikes me as funny, but that's another story!) It's just how they communicate with each other and express themselves, in their world. It's temporary - I don't have to like it and I stay out of it. I'm sure I had all kinds of little nuggets of verbal creativity at that age!

It can also mean "for the win" and you have to figure that out based on the context. If I don't know the context, I don't even try to guess.

it can also mean 'for the win' :goodvibes

I'd guess that a lot of the instances of FTW over the last few days is this, not the other meaning, in reference to our military.

There is a pretty famous quote from Full Metal Jacket:

"Then how about getting with the program? Why don't you jump on the team and come on in for the big win"

The FMLs I see make me chuckle. Teens can be so dramatic. :lmao:

It means "for the win". Forget all other explanations. It's an old sports announcers term ("Jordan takes the final shot...for the win!"). The term was subsequently made popular by on-line gamers, who then shortened it to an acronym, ftw. It's pretty commonly used these days.

For The Win.

It's a sports/game play saying. As in "And now to the blue team...this question is For The Win..."

Well, it definitely is For The Win, but as I understand it, it really came from online roleplaying games like World of Warcraft and such, at least as an everyday term.

The big saying on warcraft is ( or was ) Druids, FTW.... druids being a class of character that could do just about everything in the game fairly well.

I have no doubt it was likely used before Warcraft, but Warcraft has turned it into an everyday term, IMO.

That and PWND...which i don't understand at all. I know what it means, but cannot for the life of me figure out from whence it came.
