what does everyone think about Target grocery prices?

I only buy Target groceries when they are on sale. They have printable store coupons on their website that are fabulous! Plus you can combine them with manufacturer's coupons. Sale + Target Coupon + Manufacturer's Coupon = Awesome Savings!!!

In my area Target is much cheaper than our regular grocery store , Ralph's (which is a West Coast Kroger) one example is bread at the grocery store it's regularly 3.99 a loaf and at Target it's 2.49 all the time.

We've been shopping at Target ALOT lately. Used to shop at Wal-Mart but it's so crowded and yucky lately that I'm willing to pay a bit more for Target.

We love the meat mark downs and the sales. Scored turkey sausage for $1.89 a package the other day with B2G $1 off. Hamburger for $1.80pp, burgers for $3 off. Lots of good deals.

We find target a mixed bag, somethings a lot less others a little more. A Walmart food only store is being built right next to Target (shared exterior wall close). Hopefully that will drive prices down further.

Target recently converted all of their St. Louis area stores from general merchandise/some "dry" grocery to those with a limited selection of fresh groceries. Here's my thoughts...

St. Louis is a seriously "under-groceried" market -- aside from niche' stores such as Aldi, Trader Joe's, and Walmart having gone "super" a few years back, there are only 3 "traditional" grocery chains (two are locally-based and the third is part of the Supervalu family of stores). There is little else to choose from since Kroger abandoned the market back in 1986 and Loblaws sold-out their "National" chain to a competitor in the 90's (all happening way before Walmart got in the grocery business).

It was a perfect opportunity for Target and a welcome addition to the mix, as in most cases, they are now nipping at Walmart's heels on price (and the fact their stores aren't packed with people), discounts are easy to get at with the 5% credit/debit card in addition to whatever manufacturer's/store coupons the shopper has -- plus Target is now giving the "legacy", monopoly stores something new to worry-about besides the Wal...

Competition is the key, and I am fortunate to live in an area that has several stores that double coupons (Kroger -up to .50 daily, Harris Teeter and Lowes up to .99 daily) also Harris Teeter regular has triple coupons (for a week) up to .99, or super doubles up to $1.50 so that really keeps them all on their toes for the food dollars. Also, we have Super Targets, Super Walmarts, TJ, Whole Foods, Fresh Markets, Aldis, Food Lion and maybe more, so needless to say, I do very well with couponing stacked with sales and buy one -get one (you also can get just 1 for half price). Also, watch, as others have said, for marked down meats and freeze them. Targets here are higher on the whole than Walmart, but even though cheaper than our higher end store (Harris Teeter) I do better at HT because of sales and coupon policies. My DH declares that I have a "built-in" computer that knows all the prices at all the stores for the things that we use, so know exactly where to buy what - he isn't far off the mark I to shop for anything

Here in Omaha I do almost 100% of my grocery shopping at Supertarget. Prices are the same, if not cheaper than Walmart and the experience is so much nicer!

The local grocery stores can't compare at all the the lower prices at Target either. I also have the Target Red Card so I get 5% off. I also print out a lot of coupons from the Target website as well.

I will go to a small local store called Fareway to stock up on meat every few months. Prices are good there for meat and it is an old fashioned meat counter so the meat, especially beef is really good. The meat at Target isn't the best. I usually stick to chicken and pork chops there. I won't touch Walmart's meat with a 10 foot pole! Yuck!

In my area the Targets are cheaper than the supermarkets for dry goods, especially when you can combine a Target coupon and a manufacturer coupon. I don't find Target's meat or produce really cheap.

The regular supermarkets have gotten insanely expensive.

There are a couple of good produce stores within 20 minutes that are usually 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of the supermarkets for produce and meat. I love walking out with a heaping cart for $50.

I find the prices OK. The shopping experience, however, makes it a not very serious contender for my grocery dollars. Parking is a problem at my nearest store. There's one entrance on the left side of the building. The grocery section is on the right. I have to pass the crowded cashier area and aisles of regular merchandise. Then there's usually a much longer wait than a traditional grocery store. In all, it adds about half an hour to my shopping time, and I have to deal with a lot more crowds and congestion. I never thought I'd say this, but the local WalMart provides a much more positive, efficient experience when it come to groceries. I still prefer Aldi and the traditional grocery store.

I do sho[ Targets sales and if I have coupons sometimes. Our Walmarts is more expensive than our grocery stores. I shop mainly at Krogers and Heartland (Spartan store.) But I do go to Meijer's for sales and other Spartan stores in our area (they have different sales .)

Just wondering, is the Sutton and Dodge brand available at all Targets?
I have found that I will not eat steak from any other store since tasting this brand.
Heck, I won't even order it at a restaurant, never as good as Sutton and Dodge.

That is the brand that is at my Supertarget and I was not impressed at all. The local grocery, Fareway, with the butcher counter blows the Target meat away. I am in the midwest (NE) though so we are known to have good beef! I know the best beef that my IL's can get in AZ is really not comparable.

Sadly, I am in NC, not land of beef. No Fareway . So I will Sutton and Dodge it until I can find something better.

Muushka, I live in NC also but we are not missing out on good beef. We buy Harris Teeter steaks when they put them half off (almost) grill them and I would put them to taste test with any from mid-west (I have relatives there & have eaten them there). Sometimes we marinate them in seasonings and red wine and are delicious. We seldom buy steaks at any restaurants anymore because we enjoy ours more. We get Porterhouses, NY strips or ribeyes from the butcher case and have them cut at least 1"-11/2" thick. Sometimes the thick ones are in the wrapped meats as well.

Target prices for "dry goods" like cereal, ketchup and macaroni are cheaper than our Safeway supermarket most of the time, unless Safeway is having a good sale. But Target has less of a selection than Safeway. The meat and produce at our Target never looks very appealing to me. We buy that at Whole Foods, which is costlier, but tastes better to us. I end up buying food all over the place--Target, Safeway, Whole Foods, sometimes a local butcher for unusual cuts and sometimes a local Italian grocery store for specialty items (they have the best olives and roasted peppers).

One place where I won't shop -- Trader Joe's. It might me different in other places, but our Trader Joe's is very small and the parking lot is small. I never feel safe in the parking lot or in the store because there isn't really enough space to safely drive the carts or cars.

"Sutton and Dodge" is the fresh meats brand available at all SuperTargets as well as those traditional Target stores now carrying a limited assortment of fresh groceries.

Also, a reminder for you fresh meat afficianados that mass-merchandise stores such as Walmart and Target do not have local butcher shops in side their meat department (meaning they source their meat from other providers -- if you'll look at the fine print on Target's packagaing, there's a "Hormel" logo on it).
