I went to a Target today with a big section of groceries. I noticed that some prices were better than my regular grocery store (like froozen foods, annies crackers, chips, vegtables, and milk) and some things were more expensive (like meat and juice). I am wondering what your thoughts are on Target grocery prices and how they compare with your local grocery store prices.

My local stores are. Stop and Shop, Shaws , and Market Basket
Thanks. Jen.

Ours were great until a couple months ago when EVERYTHING we buy there went up 10%.

depends. on sale with coupons the prices can be way better than the regular foodstore. i also make out well with the manager special meats, they do $3 off, once i got chicken breasts for less than 50 cents a pack with that discount, ground chicken meat for 49 cents a few weeks ago and a nice small steak for like $2. it works for me since i am single i only need to find one good package for a meal or two. the foodstore does $2 off but the packages are always way bigger, so too much food and not a good discount. the bananas are 5 cents more than TJ but still cheaper than the foodstore, so on weeks when i am not hitting TJ i grab them there. eggs are also good but only on sale. i would say its a mix like any foodstore.

Our Target's prices are comparable to WalMart. Our local grocery stores are not that great, aside from the big advertised sales.

Target isn't my main grocery store, but that's only because I shop at a military commissary. When I don't shop on base, I shop Target.

I think it depends on where you shop and what things you are comparing. My hubby LOVES Edys ice cream. its not cheap in Publix its $6 something a half gallon in Target its $3 something for the half gallon alot cheaper by far. this year we want to start eating "fresher" and he wants to try making ice cream. He bought me a pasta maker and that worked out well the other night with fresh pasta, home made sauce and homemade meatballs YUMM. I found that Publix was charging me more for thing then Walmart even with using coupons and getting buy1get1 items. I think it is wise to write down a few items you use alot and see how they compare else where. thats what i did. I dont love walmart but on one income with 3 kids I have to save all that I can. Plus watching the weird people in Walmart is sometimes a plus :lmao:

I was there today and my local market is a comissary ( military store) so I really compare target brand is better to me that walmart brand and is close if not cheaper in price! some dry goods when on sale are cheaper than anywhere ive seen.. BUT there fruit seems to go bad faster.. not sure why yet still comparing that.. overall I will go to target if I need something and cant make the base trip But they ( target) dont carry everything I need so its usually a 2 store shopping week ( which in normal anyway with sales and coupons lol)

Several times in the last few months I have needed to go tot Target and since I was there, I would do my grocery shopping as well. I was shocked at hoe much higher their prices are over Wegmans. Not only higher but the selection is so little compared to Wegmans. I'll stick to Wegmans.

The Target I shop at has great prices. Definitely comparable to Walmart. I don't buy meat at either place though, both are high compared to the grocery stores sales.

I do pretty well at Target, but I love our Super Target, maybe I'm partial. lol. I shop mainly at Publix and Target.

I like Target because I can use a manufacturer and a Target printable. I get 5% back if I use their debit, and because of the manager markdown on meat as well. I love that!

I generally do pretty well, I get most of our fruits and veggies from a farmer's market, but I have to agree with a PP, their produce seems to go bad faster. I bought a tomato the other day for dinner the next day, and the next day, it had mold on it. It was really strange.

The Walmart is cheaper, but I like the cut of meats better at Target. (I prefer Whole Foods, but it's on the other side of town now, since we've moved--and the SuperTarget is closer by half an hour.)

I like their produce better also.

I shop at Publix, Target and Whole Foods, for meats, produce, etc. I do go to Walmart for some things (prepacked or frozen stuff, or if I'm out of milk). I never go to the other stores here (Food Lion and Winn Dixie)--I just don't like their quality.

Here Target and Wal-Mart are both much more expensive than our grocery store.

Hey Jen, I've found that some prices are pretty good but I end up spending way more than when I'm at my grocery stores, impulse buys kill me at Target! I'm from MA and have the same local stores as you but I use a site called Jumpstartshopping which list the best prices for those three stores. It works pretty good even though my goto store is Market Basket it does help me find great deals at the other stores.

It all depends on what I'm buying. I know Target has certain items much cheaper than my local grocery stores (Super One and Cub) while other items are a lot higher. I will make several stops in a week to hit sale/coupon items at whichever store is selling what I need for the cheapest price. But I live a minute away from one store and only about ten minutes from the others.

I agree with Edy's ice cream. It was $6.49 at Cub yesterday, $3.49 at Target!

It definitely depends what I am buying. Our Target used to be very similar to Walmart in pricing (but a much better shopping experience), until our Target got remodeled to include more groceries. The prices after the remodel are much higher, even on things they carried before like cereal. Some items are more than Harris Teeter, which is not particularly known for low prices (but has great sales). Most packaged goods still beat Harris Teeter regular prices, but Harris Teeter sale prices are usually better than Target prices.

I still love Target, but I can't always count on it being the lowest priced store anymore.

Our Target is comparable to Walmart. With the 5% off for using the redcard it definetly just as good and a nicer place to shop. Our Walmart is small, cramped and dirty.

Each week I'm buying more and more groceries at Target then at the supermakets.

A few months ago when our Kroger store stopped doubling coupons, I started doing the bulk of my grocery shopping at the Super Target. I find the prices better than our Kroger. I still make 2 shopping trips in a week. I shop Target for most of my groceries and Kroger for the sale items. I do come out cheaper this way.

Canned soups are way cheaper at Super Target than my local store. I really like the Archer Farms stuff.

I have found Target's prices to be lower in our area than the local grocery stores especially for meat. I did notice that some of the packages of meat state "Previously Frozen" (tiny print in label) so I guess they are not always the freshest of selections but that's probably why they can keep prices low while shipping items from store to store.

I do just about all of my grocery shopping at SuperTarget. From my comparisons, it's only a few cents more (if it is more at all!) than the Walmart next door, but for the difference in shopping experience (nicer employees, cleaner store) I will happily pay that small price difference.
