I have a 5 piece set I received at my bridal shower, that was purchased at Cosco. I have used it with no problem for 4 years. Now that there is a new 50 lb weight limit for checked baggage with Delta, I'm trying to figure out how much the largest piece of luggage (standard size with wheels & pull handle) weighs before it is packed (I believe it is made by Ricardo). I weight the clothes I will be putting in it (so far!), and I am up to 35 lbs. I will have to add a sweat jacket, undergarments, and sandles, and possibly my toiletry bag. I am really bad at guesstimating weight, as everything feels heavy to me! I am hoping the luggage alone weighs only a few pounds. Anybody know......

Our new 26" case weighs around 15#. I used our bath scales to check after they were packed.

Buy an inexpensive medium to large duffle bag ($10-$25 at Wal Mart, Target....). Pack it. You can either use it for souvenirs coming home or for redstributing your stuff if you're heavy going down.

A 26" bag packed (but not stuffed) should come in at under 50 lbs. If you're running tight buy your HBA (shampoo, sun tan lotion etc) in FL.

To save space and weight I transfer shampoo and other itme into smaller bottle's that i will throw away on the way back.im alos taking shoes on my carry on as that is lighter so far.

Lots of luck:D

go to www.ebags.com and see if you can match up your bag to one there. Weights are listed for you. Packing a 26inch case should not put you over the 50 lb limit. be careful of the 30inch bag because filled it can get very heavy! Remember you need to be able to handle it yourself. Most airlines allow atleast 2 checked and one carryon per person so do yourself a favor and don't pack one "tomb" of a bag. Distribute the weight into two smaller bags. Your back and husband will thank you for not having one huge bag of bricks!

My DW's softsided Samsonite 26" wheeled bag weights about 11 pounds empty. It is usually between 45 and 50 pounds packed, depending on how many shoes she takes along. Fortunately, ATA has a 70 lb limit per checked bag, so we don't end up paying extra even for heavier loads. Of course, my back pays the price carrying the loaded bag up and down the stairs at home.

Most large cases weigh between 9-18 lbs., depending on their construction. Old hardside cases made before about 1985 will sometimes weigh as much as double that.

US carriers have been lax about weight enforcement for nearly forever, but European carriers have never been lax about it. However, even when a bag is heavy, maneuvering one larger wheeled bag through an airport is usually easier than moving two. Do what seasoned international travellers have always done; put a sturdy cloth duffel on top of your clothes or in an outside pocket, and plan to move some of your heavier items into it just before you check the bags. (Shoes are a good candidate!)

TIP: It's easier to shift items out of your main bag into a duffle if you have bagged these items in ziplocs ahead of time, just grab and stuff. Also, make sure that you have put a luggage tag on your duffel ahead of time.

When I arrive at my destination, I step aside at the luggage carousels and put the contents of the duffel back into the larger bag, then roll on out.
