What do your little children wear (clothing) while visiting WDW?

Oops, found the thread!

I'm a total sewing novice. On a scale of 1-10, how hard are the tank top dresses?

I always suggest to my new sewing students-start with a pillowcase dress. It is very simple and gives a great deal of satisfaction. I have a pattern I drafted-but there are lots of websites that list the details as well. Good luck! Sewing really is a lot of fun!

I agree with Cindy that the pillow case is very very easy to make , but if you can do a straight seam you can do the tank top dresses, I do not want to hijack this thread , but i could post pictures for you guys to see how easy it is , otherwise just pm me and I will send you(or anyone that wants them) the directions on how to do it:) No pattern needed!

No need to worry about thread hijacking (not from me at least), I'd love too see all the photos!!! :)

There was really only one day that my kids wore Disney at Disney and that was during our character breakfast/first day at MK. The rest of the time they were in comfortable, breathable clothes because it was HOT!!!! =)

DS did take 2 McQueen shirts but he chose to wear them on the trip down so they were dirty by the time we got to the park! LOL

Obviously, if you want to get the clothes, you can do it and have fun with it - but don't worry that your kids will feel left out if they aren't wearing Disney-wear! Granted, we were there in January and it was cold, so no one was wearing dresses, anyhow. But, I'd say less than a quarter of people were wearing any Disney themed stuff, and I'm not sure if I saw *anyone* with custom/Etsy Disney clothes. The only time we saw a lot of people dressed up was at 1900 Park Fare, when most of the little girls had their princess dresses on for dinner. Dd actually wore a generic fairy dress-up dress, because it is the only one she would wear at home longer than 5 minutes, unlike the scratchy Disney ones. (Obviously, not a risk for a custom cotton one.)

Of course, the other question is, will your kids want to dress up in the clothes you get for them?

My kids wear a Disney shirt (usually from the Disney store or online) and shorts when we are in Disney. When we cruised my dd and her cousin did wear matching Cinderella costumes from the Disney store for dinner one night.

I usually have custom-made Disney outfits for each day we are in the parks. NOT Princess Dresses. Our last trip was around Christmas, so I also had custom Christmas outfits made:

OMG!!! Stunning clothes!!! Of course, you have a really nice looking family as well. How long did it take you to design and make those? We are going in Dec this year and I am having a dilema with planning for the weather. I was thinking of possibly doing dresses for dd that could accommodate long leggings under if it's colder. Not quite sure how to plan for weather and park days:confused:

Thanks for the compliments, but I do not sew! I bought all of their outfits off of Ebay. Just go to Ebay.com and do a search for custom Disney or smocked disney and you should get a ton of search results. If you want specific sellers, just let me know and I will PM you that info, as I can't post it was part of this public thread.

We have been in December twice. In 2005 it was mostly cold weather and this past December 2008, it was mostly hot - low 80's each day. I just got outfits that were sleevless and could be layered. I brought turtlenecks and tights in case it got cold.

A lot of the fun of making customs is to make them park/character specific. When you start planning your itinerary, just think about how many days in each park, and what your kids love about them (specific theme, character, ride, etc.) Either A line or any jumper bodice type dress can be easily layered; I would bring leggings or tights and a selection of short and long sleeved/turtleneck tops so that no matter what the weather, you can still wear the customs over the top and they look adorable. Come check us out on the disboutiquers thread any time and you'll get lots of great ideas and enabling- I mean support!! Definitely check out the first page, it will give you tons of great info!

I also agree with Cindy about the pillow case being one of the easiest dress to make, but the tank tops are also very easy,

If you can do a straight seam that is all you need... maybe pictures will help you better

cut the top at desired length

2008_05240001.jpg

just to avoid for the knit fabric to stretch...specially at the beginning when you are learning I advise to run a straight seam (where the skirt will be attach)
2008_05240003.jpg

2008_05240005.jpg

for the skirt: I like mines with a lot of gather so what I do ...usually fabric is 44-45" wide (but you can also get the 60").... I take the measurements I need for length and add 2 " for top seam and hem line...so if the skirt is to be 20" I cut the fabric at length at 22" ...you'll need 2 panels they will be each 22" by 44/45" ----sew side seams together --

2008_06020001.jpg

turn fabric to right side and iron at the seams-- at this point I like to do the hem too... I iron the hem folds so it is easier to sew-- fold bottom hem fabric1/4" iron and fold again and iron

2008_06020002.jpg

2008_06020039.jpg

run a gathering seam on the top --gathering seam is the longest straight stitch in your sewing machine -- and pull the thread you will see the fabric begin to gather-- do so carefully so you do not break the thread-- I like to do 2 gathering seam as I never had one break-- start from one seam to another and stop

2008_06020003.jpg

2008_06020007.jpg

2008_06020008.jpg

place skirt and top right side together

2008_06020015.jpg

2008_06020016.jpg

match seam lines top and bottom skirt

2008_06020018.jpg

pin in place
2008_06020025.jpg

I like to run a basting seam by hand before sewing in my machine

2008_06020026.jpg

2008_06020031.jpg

Iron at the gathering seam and sew in your machine

2008_06020033.jpg

2008_06020036.jpg

2008_06020038.jpg

turn right side and iron the dress at the seam and you can leave it as is, add rick rack or top stitch

2008_06020040.jpg

2008_06020045.jpg

add some ribbons and done with the dress!

2008_06020047.jpg

as I said if you can do a straight seam you can do it. it just take practice,

i think I posted this tutorial also on the disboutique thread, you can join us there ,post any question you have and the ladies and one gentleman I know will help , but on the first page of each disboutique thread Teresa has the bookmarks and they are full of informations and patterns for any conceivable project you might want to start!!!!

Wow! So many beautiful handmade outfits on this thread. :lovestruc

I have a DS so no princess dresses here. For our past trips I have just brought DS's cutest "playclothes" type outfits. I am not a fan of character clothing (just jammies) so I bring all of DS's cutest shirts and shorts. Most of my favorite things for DS are from Nordstrom - they have such a great kids department and great sales. :thumbsup2

Thanks so much. I will definitely head over to the Disboutiquers. I was thinking the same things about layering -- simple long sleeve shirts or t-necks and leggings. For my ds I'm sure I could put a t-shirt over a long sleeve shirt as well. I don't want anything too busy for him, but something simple to coordinate with dd.

DH would never participate. I'll just try to coordinate things with his basic colors in his wardrobe so family photos are presentable.

I'm not a big fan of character clothing either and have generally stuck to pajamas as well. As ds gets older though he prefers wearing t-shirts to the button up shirts I prefer. Also, I tend to like solids for photos as you really don't want the clothes to be distracting. But if I can find some simple outfits (like the zebra Mickey heads for AK) I may go with it. They really are adorable.

We are hoping to go next year for Halloween and I plan to get some custom made outfits for my DD. Not necessarily one for every day but probably around 5 or so for a 10 day trip.

I love to make costumes for my kids to wear to Disney - now they've come to expect it. My children are 5 & 2 and when I make the costumes, I make sure that they are very lightweight and comfortable. This year I made a Cars shirt for DS5 along with Peter Pan, Hercules, Pirate, and Aladdin. I made DD2 tinkerbell, ariel, belle, aurora, cinderella, and jasmine. It is really easy and fun! I even made myself several disney themed summer dresses and shirts for my husband. When we do Disney, we go all out. It makes the vacation even more fun!

Denise, stephes, cindi, tricia ...sewing is not that difficult and maybe it can be something you can look into....caution: once you start is hard to stop... and it does not have to be complicated either.... we have a designer in the thread known as CarlaC she is one of the most amazing people and makes patterns that anyone, I mean anyone can do even if you never done any sewing ...you can find her patterns at youcanmakethis.com

nothing is as easier as this one ...tank top cut it and add the skirt piece voila a custom outfit in less than 30 min

my point is that you do not need to be intimidated give sewing a try and come join the disboutique thread ( I consider myself kind of new in the thread) the ladies and one gentleman (TOM) they all do amazing stuff and they are all so helpful:grouphug: one big online family , but like I said it is very addictive!!!!:lmao:

do you sell your stuff anywhere??? I tried sewing... not too good! but i LOVE these dresses!

We did some charctor themed clothing for my dd, but mostly her nicer normal day stuff. When we go next year with DD (2.5) , DS(1) ,DN(6) I will do some custom clothing but I would let them be comfortable. Thought,,,,, clothing at theme parks has a tendancy to get stained don't know how or when but there ya go it go stained some where in the day. keep that in mind what ever you pack.

I'm not sure if direct links are allowed, but I'm pretty sure that I have her marked as a favourite in etsy. If you do a search on etsy for disney princess dress, you should be fine!
