What do you think will happen to US cruises if Coronavirus spreads?

I guess the cold comfort in this situation would be- if the situation is severe enough that it warrants Disney completely cancelling your cruise... you probably didn't want to be on the ship anyway. I'm feeling the same way for my early April cruise. Hopeful that we are able to sail (it is a big cruise for us- both of our kiddos birthdays, celebrating my Dad beating cancer last year, and my wife finally finding a job after over 2 years of searching), but if it is cancelled, we can always re-schedule. I think the next 10-14 days will be very telling as to the next several months of cruising.

"The CDC said two of those hospitalized had traveled to China recently and were displaying respiratory symptoms. "

Man this is so often, almost always actually, the case. So many thoughtless selfish people out there.

Well that's a little harsh! Consider the context of the situation.... these passengers boarded the cruise ship 12 days ago, before all this stuff about Coronavirus and restricted travel started. Those guests most likely came down with the flu while onboard, having no symptoms at embarkation 12 days ago. I did hear that at least 1 is a confirmed case of flu, not Coronavirus, plus the CDC considered this particular cruise ship situation "very low risk" which to me means they are just being overly cautious.

Just saw that Royal Caribbean is not allowing any China, Hong Kong, or Macau passport holders to board their cruises through the month of February. This is regardless of timing of last visit to those locations.

You kinda make it sound like anyone who is from china, hong kong, or macau can't board, but it's any nationality.

The newly tightened measures also say that people, "regardless of nationality," will be prevented from boarding any ships in the fleet if they have traveled "from, to, or through mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macau less than 15 days prior to their sailing" or had close contact with someone who has. These rules are for guests and crew members alike, the company said. "

That’s messed up.
I guess I don't really think it is. They need to take precautions. This may be a bit heavy handed but I can see why they are doing it. (I say this as someone who has family that live in Hong Kong. I asked them about something like this and they understood).

No it has changed. It is now exactly what the person said. "Through the month of February 2020, any guest that holds a Chinese, Hong Kong, or Macau passport, will be unable to board any of our ships, regardless of residency. " for Royal Caribbean.

I know someone who was planning their honeymoon to hong kong in a week, and their family said they refuse to see them if they still went to hong kong because they didn't want to risk spreading

Guess there are all sorts of misinformation out there.

I'm going on a cruise on Feb 16 (not DCL) but mildly concerned. We have cancellation insurance and debated, I'm going with my elderly parents as well. We really want to get out of the cold and go, but really do not want to take unnecessary risks either, nor do we want an extra 2 weeks stuck on a ship! We have another week to think about it, but either way I feel like we could regret our decision!

I don't think so. If you've travelled to China recently you owe the world a courtesy to not put others in possible danger. But perhaps you're right about the time frame. It feels like its been forever since this started but i guess it hasn't been that long.

I think there is misinformation but also everything is changing rapidly. I was just on the RCI site to book something for my upcoming cruise and I noticed the change in language.

I agree. This is the PC, don't be harsh, it's ok, do you, and then we don't use common sense and everyone gets sick mentality. Maybe they recover and end up fine, but maybe they spread their brewing illness to a Wish kid on a cruise. Now that's harsh. Of course this isn't just Coronavirus, this is people who try to skirt the Fever Vomiting Diarrhea rules by taking Pepto and an Ibuprofen or parsing vowels on the embarkation paperwork...."I only have vomiting, not a fever and vomiting, so it's ok," or "I haven't had a fever in 24 hours," knowing full well they have been taking fever reducing meds (that is the reason the asymptomatic transmission rumor started through the press). Perhaps the RCL people are all sick with the flu, maybe not, but there are still clear reasons that we are quarantining and turning away foreign nationals with history of travel to China.

I will be cruising on the Dream in a couple of weeks. I’m wondering if DCL has started any enhanced health screenings at the terminal in Port Canaveral prior to cruise and if perhaps the Bahamas will not allow ships to dock for fear of the virus by then.

I guess I live under a rock. 12 days ago when these passengers first boarded the RCL ship, I had never heard of Coronavirus or any outbreak/pandemic/etc. And I have several colleagues in China. I haven't been to China, but I certainly would not have known to share that info if I had.

Do you wonder why there are reports of bodies in the hallways of hospitals in Wuhan? Why the journalist who reported that gem have disappeared. Why the infection and death rate dramatically increase daily? I don’t. I know exactly why. Wait until they start going house to house and find the bodies.

quarantines exist so that disease doesn’t spread but also to protect the system from being over run, which is the case in China right now. Resources like vents or even masks and IVs are finite. When the system is overwhelmed, you get government tents and surging infection/death rates. Right now, in the US, its manageable.

the reason your Chinese friends haven’t reported on how bad it is, is that they will disappear just like everyone else who tells the truth in China. Official party line is everything is great in China. the situation is far more dire in China than they admit.
