How does everyone explain to their children why the costume characters can't talk? How do you explain why they can't talk and the face characters can? Any good ideas? I certainly don't want to spoil the magic for my little ones. Thanks!

The costumed characters are so animated with hand gestures, most of the time the kids don't notice they aren't speaking...

Or maybe it was just my sloooow kids :lmao:

DD decided that Ursula must have stole their voices too and we went with that. However, she very much is aware (without anyone telling her) that the characters are people in costumes. Kids catch on more than we give them credit for!!!!

Even though my then 5 year old knew they were people in costumes, it didn't spoil the magic for her in the least. She was still excited to see them and loved having her picture made. I don't, however, think she noticed at all that one type of character talked and the other didn't - so you might not even have an issue! Have fun!!!

Even though I know they're just people in costumes, at 24 I still get excited to see them too! :yay:

My favorite response to these kind of questions is "I don't know, what do you think?". They come up with great stuff!

What do you mean by 'people in costumes?'

We JUST had this conversation yesterday in the car - my 5 yr-old asked the question, I tried to dodge it by talking about something else related to WDW... I'm SURE It will come up again as we're leaving in 4 days so I'll have to ask her what she thinks..... I like the Ursula stole their voices thought!

I saw this on these boards before.....something like, the characters had to give up their voices in order to come to life? They are so animated and good at communicating without speaking that you do kind of forget......And even tho' part of my adult mind knows that it is a person in a costume, part of me is excite to see and hug them....and it's REALLY great when they wave at me during the parades!!!!!!:wizard:

I can totally relate. At the dremas come true show Peter Pan waved at me :yay: It was the first thing I told my husband when we caught back up with him :hyper:

I got this tip from the DIS boards and used it with DD in Feb - The characters would lose their voice if they talked to everyone and it wouldn't be fair to talk to some kids and not others, so they don't talk at all with their voices except when they are on stage so they can talk to lots of kids at once.

That made perfect sense to her and when Tigger purred while he hugged her later on our trip she felt ultra special because he used his voice.

She did ask why the princesses could talk but then immediately provided that the Fairy Godmother protects their voices since they are princesses.

I am well over 50 and now I learn that there are people in costumes:rotfl: :lmao: yes, children do catch on quicker than we give them credit for. But that is good, isn't that what pixie dust is for pixiedust:
