What do you put on your pasta: sauce or gravy??

Sauce, red (tomato based) or white (bechamel/cheese), on pasta.
Gravy on chicken, beef, etc., made from the juices in the pan, gravy powder and flour.

Do you say the same as me?
 
I call it sauce. I don't use jarred though, make my own with ground beef and sausage, and mushrooms. Yummo!

I've only ever heard it called Gravy in Mob movies. Maybe I don't have enough Italian friends. LOL

I don't understand why people use jar sauce. It doesn't take that long to make it from scratch.

Never heard of anyone calling it gravy..though really sauce and gravy are pretty much the same don't you think!?

Sounds like me. We always called it gravy growing up, but as I got older, people were like :confused3 whenever I said gravy so now I call it sauce. As for jarred sauce (gravy), I am :confused3 . It's so gross to me. Do people really like the taste? When I moved it with my husband, I threw all of his jars out. I told him jarred sauce will never cross the threshold again :rotfl:
 
Speaking as a good Italian girl from Jersey...;)

The red stuff on pasta is "gravy", provided it has been cooked for a million hours on the stovetop with meatballs, sausage and bracciole swimming around in it. If it has no meat in it, it's marinara "sauce", but that would be unheard of, especially on a Sunday. :faint:

The brown stuff on beef is also gravy, but we specify "brown gravy". The "red gravy" on pasta is just "gravy".
 
Even funnier, if you asked my grandmother what she was making for dinner, her answer would just be "gravy".
The pasta, meatballs, etc. that went along with it was just assumed.

I'm an Italian (OK, half Italian) from NY & I have never called the stuff I put on pasta "gravy". My Italian grandma never called it that either. I guess her family came from a different part of Italy or something.
 
I call it red sauce, as opposed to white sauce (bechamel) or cheese sauce [or Hollandaise, but I almost never ever make that].

My dad [half-Italian] calls it gravy.

Mug- Yep, I am from Chicago, too. Even went to Catholic school. Can't get more stereotypical. And if you do call it sauce, the "au" is not pronounced like the "awe" in awesome. It's like and "ah" sound! Da' Bears...my dad, a Chicaahgo cop, sounds like those guys!
 
Sauce if just veggies, gravy if there is meat in there (ground, meatballs, sausage, brachiole (sp)).

Here in my section of NJ (with a fair amount of mob members), everyone calls it gravy. I only buy ragu for the kids, for emergency meals for them - DH and I don't eat jarred sauce. It's so easy to make, and I make it in large batches, so I usually have some in the freezer.
 
DH's family is all italian and we're from NJ and it's ALWAYS tomato sauce.

For me and DH's family gravy is the stuff you make from pan drippings when you roast meat/poultry.

Must be. Where I live, all the people call it sauce. Even the nationwide commericals call it sauce. I think maybe "gravy" is a New York Italian word. :confused3 By definition, ragu is simply a sauce with meat.
 
I am starting to think the gravy for red sauce is a NY Italian thing because my NY born Italian grandmother calls it gravy. I on the other hand call it sauce (sometimes spaghetti sauce even if we aren't eatting spaghetti!!) I too can NOT buy canned red sauce - its just not the same as home made and its not like it takes that long.
 
Calling it gravy isn't just an NY thing, the Italians here in Chicago (and surrounding italian suburbs) call it that too.

I do think it's an Italian-American thing, more than a person who actually lives in Italy.;)
