I wasn't referring to you calling people intolerant or ignorant. I was referring to others. Just because I think the hyphenated Americanism is unneccessary does not mean I care if they feel better calling themselves that, just don't expect me to call them that - we are all Americans IMO.

Brenda, I don't believe anyone requested to be addressed in such manner. If I were to see you at a Dis meet I wouldn't address you as "Hi white american just as I wouldn't want you to address me as Hi black american.

First of all I could care less than a penny what others call me or think what I am, I know what I am and I will call myself what I want to call myself and if I lived 48 years calling myself dingo-american than why the heck should anyone care?

I don't have to PROVE anything, I responded to a person who quoted a bumper sticker that said if I choose NOT to be what they quantify themselves as that I should "GET OUT".... was I supposed to just roll over and accept that?

Pongo put it smoothly, no one points to a person and notates what they are, just who they are. But check an employment application, which, btw, I've seen MANY of in the past few days, they will not ask you if you are Black, but an African American. Yes, Jason, we were and are still called many other things, this is the only one I believe, WE chose.

Calling myself a no hyphen american will make others stop treating me differently? Hmmmmm.... I think THAT'LL happen!

People please, I have explained and explained and explained and I obviously will NEVER satisfy any of my distractors. I don't like explaining myself but I have been put into this situation and it truly disturbs me. No one, knows who I am and none of you have "walked a mile in my mocassins" or have to raise my child in this "get out" and "get over it " society BUT me. And like I used to say to my ex if you don't pay my rent I don't owe you anything.

What I'm saying is that I've met a number of people that don't like to hear blacks referred to as blacks - they want everyone else to use the term African-American because that is the term they prefer. While they are free to do so, that freedom doesn't extend to making me do so.

If someone changes their legal name to "African-American Keisha", then I'll be happy to refer to them by that name. But when referring to blacks in general, no, I won't use the term African-American. Just like I don't use the terms Italian-American or Greek-American or Irish-American.

Robin, in my world, there would be no "pick your race" category on ANY application of any kind, for jobs, college, loans, whatever.
