I'm in Canada, and I do not know if the US debit cards have this Flash technology on the debit cards or not. Does anyone else in Canada have these, or just Ontario so far?
Yesterday we received new debit cards through the mail. In addition to chip technology, they have flash technology. It says "a new contactless feature that allows you to make small purchases at select merchants without having to insert your card or enter your PIN. It's safe, secure and very convenient."
Secure... sure. At first thought it sounds like a very convenient way to make my debit card even more unsecure and easy to steal. The bank has already cancelled my husband's debit card TWICE saying the card # was compromised. And twice my husband phoned the bank to cancel and re-issue cards when he was sure it was double-swiped.
My husband says no way. I'm leaning towards no as well. When I phoned Royal Bank, the CSR explained that even though there are currently only TWO retailers (in Toronto) who have the flash technology, the bank is rolling these out to all their customers.
She did say that I can place dollar limitations on gas, groceries, and something else. Or I can have them "turn off" this feature. I'm inclined to cut these cards up and keep using our old cards. Even if the bank "turns off" this feature for us, I wonder if someone can "scan" our information to access our bank accounts.
Thoughts? Pros, cons? Any info?
