What do you do?

This happened to us 2 years ago just before Christmas. We were on I-74 between Indianapolis and Cincinnati on our way to Tennessee during a HUGE snowstorm and were stuck for 4 hours. We had plenty of gas as we had filled up shortly before we got stopped. Had plenty of snacks, had blankets etc...But the thought of spending all night in a car with 2 kids was pretty grim since I would have died of boredom or from head pain after pulling all my hair out. DH who has "never met a stranger" however, was having the best time walking all up and down the highway yakking it up with everyone.

When I was all of 22, I made the mistake of driving through Portland, OR when a blizzard hit. Well, Portland doesn't get much snow, so they don't own many snowplows and it was a Sunday, so there wasn't much of a reason to get the snowplows out.

Luckily, I had plenty of gas and studded tires on my car. I had chains for the tires, but they were in the trunk. I couldn't get off the interstate because most every off-ramp had a semi-truck stuck on it. There were numerous minor accidents all around. A lot of cars just pulled off to the side of the road, which looked like they ought to have had big targets painted on them. The snow was deep enough on the road that you couldn't see the lines to mark the lanes.

I feared that if I pulled off to the side of the road to get my chains on, I would get hit by another car. However, I knew that north of Portland, it was raining instead of snowing. So, I drove very slowly (like 30 mph), left plenty of room between me and the guy in front of me (not to mention any other cars I saw), and kept driving. The snow did turn to rain before I hit Olympia, WA, where I stopped at a gas station to calm my frazzled nerves.

That's what you do in situations like this. It also comes in handy, one of these "strangers" might have something you need to borrow....like a battery charger (yep, it happened to me, left the radio on too long and killed the battery) :teeth:

L107Angel, is that you?!? :lmao: She has a bad habit of killing her battery. I had to run and flag down an employee at Knoebel's b/c her battery was dead.

I'd probably be unconscious from banging my head so hard on the steering wheel, I wouldn't have to deal with the other things.

well at least she knew where her car was this time :teeth:

If that happens to me here, it's time to move farther south... a lot farther!

I was stuck in my car in a storm in 1990 (no cell phone) when they shut down the highway, but fortunately it was only for three hours. I worried about running out of gas, so I turned off my engine...then I worried about freezing to death.
