I throw them in the freezer with the best of intentions and then 6 months later they end up in the trash. Unless its homemade bread, then I have to fight with my oldest ds for them.
If they're close enough in size to a regular slice I use them as if they were. If they are like half size, I nibble on them while making a sandwich. A little peanut butter and they make a good snack.
I love them toasted also, especially toasted really dark brown. I buy whole grain wheat bread for DH and me, but the boys won't eat anything but white bread. Since they have toast most mornings and sandwiches for lunch, that's a lot of heels that neither of them will touch.
I'm going to start using them for french toast, that sounds yummy! And I just discovered Franz whole grain white bread ... hoping this is healthier for everyone...?
breadcrumbs - french toast - croutons - birds - all have been WONDERFUL suggestions.
I like the sandwich option personally. PBJ or plain sliced cheese. When it comes to PB there is no slice on the loaf that can handle spreading PB than the heel and the jelly can't squish out either. And yes - I make my PBJs like any kid - slather on the PB and then 1/2 a jar of jelly. Is there any other way?
my dog is snooty. she sniffs at things like that and then looks at your like your an idiot for thinking that she would be interested in something like that.
Although I did like the idea of meatloaf filler...but then I'd actually have to MAKE the meatloaf.
Won't throw them out for the animals, we have had an increase in rat population that all areas are trying to control and stop, putting food out intentionally is not a good idea here.
My DH needed two sandwiches today for a very long day at work. I made a yummy roast beef sandwich out of the last two "real" slices of bread, and the heels went "inside out" for a PB&J for much later on in the day. He says he doesn't care, so he gets them if I run out.
