What do you do when you get "the look"

that almost everyone in our family are huge Disney World nuts and wish we could live there!

I have one DSIL that until she went down for our wedding at OKW did nothing but bash Disney and couldn't understand what the appeal was. To hear her say "Wow...this is nothing like what I expected" was misic to our ears :))

We've met a few grumpy gus's that hated their time there. I met a family at the pool at the All Stars once and the husband was complaining about the trip. I asked hi what he'd rather be doing and he said "playing golf". I asked him if he know Disney World had five championship golf courses and he replied "you've got to be kidding...why didn't someone tell me..."

Since we bought into DVC, it really does seem like people understand it more when you say you have a timeshare.

We don't have kids, so that's one thing that makes people question a bit more, I think. But when my wife's co-worker went at the end of last year for a large family trip with her new huband and in-laws, she came back and immediately went to my wife and said "I understand now."

It's so cool when a non-believer finally gets it!

True...

I have gotten a few times, "Why would you buy a Disney timeshare when you live just 2 1/2 hours away! :confused3

We have an even more difficult time explaining why we go to WDW because we live less than 1/2 an hour from DL. Most people can't fathom the idea that WDW is any larger than DL and don't see why we would go there when DL is in our backyard, much less spend a week or 10 days there.

When I actually enter into a discussion (which is not usually a judgemental one, more curiousity) I usually try to relate it to my home city of Long Beach and use colleges and other landmarks to give people an idea of how far apart the resorts and parks are located. I explain that it is not wall to wall houses, and much is open marsh and swamp land, but you could be staying at the Queen Mary and the Magic Kingdom would be as far away as Long Beach City College. At that point I usually get a "No....really.....it's THAT big? I thought it was just like Disneyland."

By then I just say, "You would be astonished if you went there, it is truly a city or more unto itself." I either give up then or they start to ask me questions.

I think everyone knows I'm obsessed by now. If they ask where I'm going on vacation and it's not WDW...they're usually shocked. :lmao:

I agree with the PP who said nobody asks "why?" anymore. Now they just say, "When's your next Disney trip?" :goodvibes

All of our friends have just accepted this about us, and anyone else doesn't know us well enough to question, but we don't worry about it! :goodvibes

No, I think that lack of planning often has something to do with it.

I don't think that's it, but a combination of not having the Disney Magic within you and not planning could certainly do it. On my first trip (Honeymoon with :badpc: EX-husband I'd like to do that to) we had done research, but had no idea that one needed advance ADRs, we thought you could make them when you got there. The only one I got was Coral Reef at like 8:30PM and we were seated next to the kitchen door. However, perhaps since we knew DL like the backs of our hands (there was no DCA back then) we loved every moment even if we ran from here to there with maps since we had no idea in the world where we were going. It was still magical, exploring all the rides we never experienced, seeing Epcot for the first time, MGM Studios not getting into PI because he lost his ID. We were lucky that we got back into the country on the Big Red Boat since he had no passport either!

Some people just aren't going to have a good time, and that's OK, they won't be in the lines, making ADRs and clogging things up for the rest of us who love it!

I am 13. My parents have given me permission to go to the parks on my own while they take a pool day.

I had the absolute best time, especially at EPCOT. On my way back I stopped at the CR to do some souvenir shopping and I met this cute girl and her family who were staying there. Being an extremely well-mannered young man earned me the opportunity to escort their daughter for a hamburger and a coke... my first date! Ok, it lasted all of about 30 minutes and unfortunately she was leaving the next day but it was the perfect way to cap off my day unhindered by adult supervision.

I love that day and will remember it always.

I learned after that I should get contact information so I could stay in touch... ah well.

Wow! I've seen you post on other forums and no idea you were such a young but well mannered and mature gentleman. You are definitely going to make some lucky lady very happy in the future.

Don't lose that romanticism and next time get her email or cell phone number! :thumbsup2

I am way confused...how can you be 13, yet have a father in law? I think you are recalling a memory from when you were 13, right?

I know it's past my bedtime, but I'm reading through this long thread, and am now totally confused based on the last few posts! :confused3

I'm still not convinced. I'm not a sentimentalist. I have very little "Disney Magic" in my. I don't choke up seeing the castle. By the logic you need Disney Magic in you to enjoy Disney, I wouldn't go. But I do.

I'm fascinated by the logistics. Have been since the first trip. I like watching it run.

He and I were discussing the inner child in us and our best Disney memories & his inner child is 13 years old!

Well I do live down south...

Kidding.

We were talking about what age we feel when we are at Disney as adults. I revert back to that 13 yo.

Maybe I just work with more respectful people, but they never ask why we are going there again or how we can take so many trips. Instead, they just ask what our plans are if my sister or parents are joining us (they live in Largo and Vero Beach), if we are flying, which airport, etc. It is all very kind and friendly. They now come to me as their vacation consultant to let them know if they are getting a good deal on their vacation packages, etc.

It was pretty cool to have a student in class this year whose family are DVC members. She and I could chat resorts and room configurations etc. that I can't do with non-members!

I can ignore the look...some people are nervy enough to voice thier cynicism. In 2000 my DH and I honeymooned at WDW @ the Grand Floridian -& while on that trip we joined DVC. When we got home and told people about it we heard "aren't you going to get sick of going to Disney?" quite a few times. It makes me laugh becuase we typically go 4X a year and we've yet to "get sick" of going to WDW!

You know, when people ask you why you go again or why do you love it so much....

I just hope someday it won't bother me so much and I will not try to explain, again...

My DH says we have a Disney "gene" that they are missing.

I got that, but it was the post above that confused me, so I thought perhaps I was missing something, and you were 13! :rotfl2:

Good thing summer vacation officially started today, as I need my rest, as it's been a long school year this year! LOL! :rotfl2:

I went back and re-worded the post since you weren't the only one to take it the wrong way.

Sadly or thankfully or something I am only 13 at Disney, a 13 yo with graying hair...

I'm sorry...I should have specified that it wasn't your post that confused me, but the post by franandaj.

There are probably many of us 13 year old at hearts with gray hair at Disney.:thumbsup2

As has been said many times: Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional...smjj

I must be naiive. I did think you were really 13! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

reading thru these posts made me laugh. We bought DVC on our honeymoon almost 9 years ago, and for the most part have been at least once a year since. We get the same reactions as all of you. But we enjoy it and when we try to go elsewhere the costs really add up fast so we just default to Disney. Plus with my daughter being 5 1/2 now shes really enjoying it and remember it now.

When we tell people I always tell them this upcoming trip will be our daughters 9th trip. I always get the bug eyes and jaw hitting the floor look, as most of our friends don't get the Disney thing like us. But we are closet disney lovers, we don't have any disney stuff in our house or anything. Just our trips...

I know getting "the look" and having to keep your WDW plans a secret must be frustrating, but as a daughter of two "closet Disney fans", I would like to tell you that I believe you a really doing your children a great service. There are so many more new experiences to have and memories to be made with your family in WDW than in practically any other vacation spot in the world, so be confident in your choice. I have loved every single trip my family has taken to WDW, and as we are DVCers, I plan to continue this tradition with my children as well.

So, just keep that in mind the next time your coworker scoffs at your vacation plans. They may be laughing now, but you are making memories and traditions with your family that will last forever:goodvibes

Question for whomever ask why WDW again - Have you ever taken a vacation and had someone in your party not be happy or have a good time?

That's why we continue to return.... To our "Laughing Place" WDW. Here ended the lesson. :3dglasses

This was a conversation which took place one month ago. "You're going to Disney in two weeks? I thought that you were going in November for your Anniversary?" asked my 76 year old Mom. "Yes, Mom, we're going in June for our summer vacation and again in November for our 25th Anniversary". Dead silence...and a look of disapproval. I love her but those who have never been just don't get it. And by the way she has been invited to go many times.

We have invited almost all family from both sides to share our fun so I kinda think that sometimes I get "the look" from my family because they're jealous. Or maybe they just don't "get" it.

Then on the other hand...I sent my sister & her husband to SSR while I babysitted their 4 kids for 2 days and they actually had the nerve to complain! That's the last invite they're getting so I am sure we get "the look" from them for different reasons.

All I can say is WDW is OUR happy place & if "they" don't like it, that's ok! We'll be happily enjoying ourselves with or without their approval! ;)

:rolleyes2 Wow, some people are unbelivable...:sad2:

Better keep our points for ourselves:rolleyes:
