no bath or shower? powder room
with bath or shower? washroom
looking for a public facility? washroom
I am pretty sure "washroom" is a Canadian term, or at least not one that is used in the States, every time I have used the term in the States I have received blank stares...one guy in Seattle actually outright asked me where in Canada I was from!
This must be a British term (guessing you might be from Wales from username). I’ve always thought a cloakroom was like a closet room or type of mudroom. Interesting.
We call it the bathroom in my house (has sink, toilet, tub), and restroom in public places, but in Europe I like to call it the WC or servicios, depending on where I'm at.
It is a Canadian thing - most of us would call it a bathroom or 1/2 bath in our own homes but will call it a washroom when out. As in "may I use your washroom" or "where is the washroom". I've never in my life said the word "restroom". It just sounds totally stupid to me.
In my home, bathroom. We don't have a half bath and I don't use the term powder room. When out I usually say restroom. That is what the signs say at most restaurants, etc.
My mom is from Ireland and used the term washroom. I have come across it in Canada also.
I guess in a house I usually just say “bathroom”, but in public places tend to use the term “restroom”. At one time at least, wasn’t it also called “the necessary room”?
Yup. I don't recall seeing Real Estate websites use powder room of washroom, the just list bathrooms.
In our house, if I'm headed there, it's to "my office"
At our house we refer to each bath by the floor it's on, because we have just 1.5 baths for two floors. So instead of changing the name based on size, we change the name based on location---upstairs bathroom instead of bathroom or full bathroom, and downstairs bathroom instead of half bathroom or powder room.
I voted for "powder room", though, since it's what I'd call a 2 pc. bathroom in conversation if being precise. In terms of realty, though, around here they refer to bathrooms as half, three-quarter, or full baths.
