What did you do to save money this week (2/4/07)?

is this ok to do on the side of the kitchen sink that has the garbage disposal too? even tho I ask him not to, my guy pours grease & greasy meat drippings down the drain & we are renting, I dont want to clog up a drain that is not ours nor break the gargage disposal. :confused3

I can't imagine why not. I put grease down my disposal, and also boiling water to wash it awat.

I'm really confused by The Grocery Game...when I put in my zip code the only 2 stores that come up are Hy-Vee and Walgreens...2 stores that I wouldn't normally shop at because the Hy-Vee here has way higher prices than Wal-mart (as well as Wal-Greens).

Also...Wal-Mart will price match anything that is a lower price (as long as you have the ad). I don't get the point of going to Hy-Vee and Walgreens when Wal-Mart will price match anything that the ad's have anyway...

Is the benefit of the grocery game more for the "unadvertised" sale items they talk about?

I'm just not seeing the point behind paying for them to go through the Sunday paper's and matching it to sale items...when I can do that in about 5 minutes on Sunday myself. And honestly, maybe it's just our crappy Sunday paper...but I MAYBE find 2 coupons a week that I would really use on typically purchased items...

HELP!!!! I need advice on The Grocery Game and how people are saving "hundreds on their grocery bill each month"...

From what I've been reading, part of the idea of the grocery game is that they have a database and they keep track of when items go on sale at rock bottom prices. So just because an item is on sale and you have a coupon, it may not be at the lowest price it WILL be. They say everything cycles over a 12 week period and they keep track of all of that.

I don't have a Super Walmart near me (at least, not that I know of) so shopping at the commissary on base and using grocery game for sales at Food Lion will probably save me money.

And I think I figured out what my problem was with my shopping. The grocery game says to shop between Sunday and Tuesday. I guess a lot of the sales stop once they run out? So that might be why I couldn't find a lot of things.

The new Publix sale flyer will be out today, so I'll take a look at that and plan next weeks meals. I'm working on getting my pantry to the point that I buy almost nothing that isn't on sale.

I realized yesterday that even though our Publix ad doesn't start until Thursday, we share an ad with a few counties west of us and for some reason their ad starts on Wednesday -- so when I go to the Publix site, if I put in one of the towns west of me, then I can get a sneak preview of the ad on Wednesday instead of having to wait til Thursday :) Not that it makes much of a difference since I can't buy the products until Thursday.

I'm excited though because they have Weight Watchers Smart Ones for 50% off and I have a stack of $1 off 5 coupons -- I told DH that I'll be stocking the freezer and can get more variety than the $1.99 ones :) Seems like there were just a few other things - I'm just glad that strawberries are affordable again - my older DS lives on them for his lunch box, for his afternoon smoothies, for his fruit-kabobs.

Here's how I've saved today - the Scholastic Warehouse is having Clearance Sale and I have a printed out coupon for two free books. But it's 30 miles round trip over there and as much as I like to go, I went in December, so I don't really need to go get more books. Plus I don't really have the time to go - I'm always there at least an hour or more when I go.

I guess this kinda goes with doing the laundry in cold water....After breakfast or whenever I need to wash little faces and hands, I run a washcloth under cold water and then put it in the microwave for 8 or 9 seconds to warm it up.

I don't waste gallons of cold water for just a little bit of warm water and I don't make our water heater kick on. And, I don't thing the micro. uses that much energy in that short amount of time....

Inspired by those of you that have called your cable companies and received better deals just for asking, I decided to do the same. We have our internet and cable (digital with DVR) through Comcast. For the first 6 months we got our internet at $19.95 as a discounted rate. Our total for both of those was $100.00 a month (ouch I know, but I have to have my DVR...I absolutely love it! and we really need high cable access with dh and I doing our classes online and our homeschool curriculum is online as well). Anyway, I just got notified that our internet rate would be going up to $39.95 now that the introductory rate was ending. I looked at DirectTV and saw that they had a cheaper rate for cable/DVR. So I called Comcast to see what they could do for me. If I added phone service, I could get a bundle package with my cable, internet and phone (free long distance) for only an extra $9.95 a month! I'm currently paying about $66 a month for just my phone so that'll save me $50 a month! And I'll also get HBO, Showtime and Starz added to my package at no extra cost. I'm very happy I called :)

Great idea--I hate washing up in cold water and wondered about how many gallons of cold water I was running just to get to the warm, not to mention kicking in the hot water heater. Problem is, the microwaves not in the bathroom--extra running around in the morning!

I did venture out today. Returned 3 bras that didn't fit. Bought 1 winter coat at 70%. Didn't really "spend" money. I was credited more money from the return than I spent for the coat. (In other words the money was already spent. Just put it to better use.) :)

Last night, my husband braved the elements and installed our brake pads and rotors, which saved us $180 (already posted about). Today, he went back to the state inspector that we went to initially that rejected our car, and he explained that he has been out of town and that's why we are just getting around to getting it reinspected. Instead of charging us the usual $16 for a normal inspection, they charged us the $1 reinspection fee that they give if you have it reinspected within 10 days (its been well over a month, but since my husband was gone because of the Navy, he understood and gave us the $1 charge). Saved $15, and had another great moment where people show how much they respect the service :)

I leave a supply of washclothes in my kitchen in the same drawer as my kitchen towels for just this purpose. After the kids brush, they come see me in the kitchen for a face scrub!!

I just called Cingular to see if we could change our plan to save some money. Unfortunately, we already have the lowest plan out there. But I was able to take off the roadside assistance fee that they had on each phone for a total savings of $6 a month :) And I found out that we have a TON of rollover minutes that we can use.

I tried the grocery game with the 4 week trial period. She only lists Food Lion in our area. I really didn't think it was worth it. To really save "hundreds of dollars" you need a store that doubles or triples coupons, and FL doesn't. Also, FL is already generally cheaper than other stores here(Harris Teeter, Giant and Farm Fresh).

I had forgotten about the ad-match at Wal-Mart. I'll have to remember that next time

DH is home sick today so he did not go out to eat lunch with work buddies. His appetite is quite low so will make a small dinner and save there too....thank goodness he is salary and will not miss a day's pay!

At least you can still laugh about it! :) I liked the anti-freeze joke ;)

Hope you're feeling better soon

Dh has his blog and podcast, but he's been so busy lately he's asked me to take over the blog. This is making great blog material. Of course, "blog" is a little more formal that "DIS post" so I'm editing for clarity. :)

Just make sure to not post DD/DS/DH/DW etc! I was in an online college seminar last night and had to keep correcting my posts before I hit send!

Yeah, it gets bad when you're talking in real life and you say something to the effect of "well, when my dh gets home tonight....." :lmao: :lmao:
