I'm not sure when fabric softener was invented, Lewski709. I can live without conditioner more than I can fabric softener though. I don't use conditioner too often, it makes my hair look too drab (I've got baby fine, but thick hair).

Me too...fine hair, but lots of it. I hate hearing that. My hair is flat as a pancake no matter the style. It's weighty anyway. I condition once every couple weeks. Thats about it.
We used vinegar. It makes things soft and will take out bad smells, but doesn't make it April fresh! It doesn't help with static cling either, but it was a start!
No fabric softner here either. I stopped using it after I read it reduces absorbency in towels. Sometimes I use white vinegar becaause it helps rinse soap out well.
