I remember that during our trip in 1995 that there was a Pocahontas show at MGM. We did not see it that trip and by the time we went back in 1996, it was gone. What was this show about?
"The Spirit of Pocahontas" was a musical re-telling of the Pocahontas story from the film. The premise was that a group of Indians had come upon some items from the British ship and were using them to tell the story of Pocahontas and John Smith. It was all told by a tribal storyteller named "Werowance." The cast was about 50% American Indian, which was cool. It was in the same theatre that housed Hunchback.
The show was really beautiful -- great sets and costumes, and Grandmother Willow had a face that was operated by a puppeteer. The musical numbers used lots of dance moves that were inspired by actual tribal dances as well as some American Indian sign language.
This musical in the Backlot Theater opened in 1995 in tandem with the release of the Pocahontas film. The audience would find themselves in a Virginia forest setting, complete with a waterfall, rocky outcroppings, and a 28-foot tall Grandmother Willow puppet. A Powhatan storyteller named Werowance invited the audience to witness a ceremonial powwow and hear the story of Pocahontas and John Smith. The show closed February 24, 1996 and was replaced by the Hunchback of Notre Dame: A Musical Adventure show. A show called Colors of the Wind: Friends from the Animal Forest (later called Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends) opened in 1998 at Camp Minnie-Mickey in Animal Kingdom.
we have seen both mgm and ak..imo ak ,while not my favorite show, is better than the mgm ( that one was kind of dumb) the ak at least tries to help instill ecological awareness. the " willow" tree is the same, the set for the mgm one was a little more interesting to look at while the "show" was putting you to sleep in fact the mgm one is responsible for my husband's refusal to do any more wdw shows till this past trip ( now thanks to lion king he loves them!) reading the one post above , i am wondering if there was athird one since the one we saw around the mid 90's doesn't sound the same, recall very little dancing, just lame acting.
