What common phrases do you hate?

"Put on your big girl panties" or anything panties. Men don't call their underwear a cute name, why should women?

"But that's just me," as in "I would never buy sheets at Target, but that's just me." A condescending way of saying, "Sure, the inferior way (in my opinion) is just fine for someone like you, but not someone like me."

I hate the "euphemistic" references to body parts that seem to have become part of general conversation... such as "the girls" to refer to breasts (I've also heard "the puppies") or the irritating "va-jay-jay."

Another one that is like nails on a chalkboard for me is the euphemism "over the Rainbow bridge". Where did that even come from? When I first heard it I thought it referred to a destination for the LGBT crowd. Call a spade a spade. Your pet died. It is no more. It has ceased to be. It is bereft of life. It is an ex-pet. (insert your favourite Monte Python phrase here). It is no longer pining for the fjords.

Well, if you care, you could look it up. Had to put my dog down today. Insensitive people are the best :thumbsup2

Sorry Minnie Mum I usually agree with so much of what you post but NOT this one The Rainbow Bridge is not a saying It is a belief and one that many, including myself, find comfort in I have many pets waiting there for me

The fur babies, yes an expression...more like a term of endearment..I prefer Puppy Heads myself ;)

I totally agree. And I too usually agree with Minnie Mum. I don't refer to my dogs as fur babies, but they are another of my children. I have 2 kids, 12 and 8. We had to put our 14 1/2 year old yellow lab down 2 1/2 weeks ago. He truly was our 1st baby and it was the most difficult thing I've ever had to do (even more difficult than seeing both of my parents buried.) Anyone who has a pet and then loses it knows that feeling. When we had to put him down, someone on the DIS shared the Rainbow Bridge story with me and I found it so lovely and comforting.

So, so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel as we were there just 2 1/2 weeks ago. We just got his ashes back on Saturday and it was like losing him all over again. Hugs to you.

I'm sorry for your loss of your dog. I am aware that the phrase comes from the poem. Origins murky. And I have had pets and grieved for them when they died. However I don't believe in anthropomorphizing animals or treating pets as children. And while I realize that I will be flamed by many, I've never believed there is a heaven for animals. If you do, and it helps you through your grieving, then that is fine. Again, as per the title of this thread- it's a phrase I have a great dislike for.

I lost my mother a week ago. Sorry, but the passing of a pet just doesn't rank anywhere close, for me.

Man cave.

Fur baby.

If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about.

My condolences on the loss of you mother I have lost a parent I understand

I won't flame you but Please though grief is grief and love is love don't belittle how others feel & what they believe ...that is how your original post was interpreted...No opinion is more worthy than anothers

I for one would NOT be in heaven if my animals and my relatives were not there

Again I do give you my sympathies

:confused3 Cannot believe I am reading that! We lost our 15 yr. old cat 3 years ago and I miss her, but relates in NO WAY how much I miss my dad & mom. They 'are' animals after all, not humans.

Sorry about your mother, it hurts so bad, I know.

:thumbsup2 Agree totally with your post!

Why are we ranking grief?
Human or animal, it is personal and it is real

We cannot measure someone else's love or loss.
I am truly sorry for those who have lost someone they love.

I can't stand it when someone says, "I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit", or some variation along those lines.

Anywho. I heard it for the first time a couple of years ago when we got a new girl in the office.

There's also a girl in our office that calls everything "generic." I'm not even sure what she means by that!
:thumbsup2

We'll so sorry your grief is different than mine. I didn't have a great relationship with my parents. My dog was like my 1st child as I said (and I have 2 actual children.) We treated him like a dog, not a human, and we never referred to him as a fur baby or to ourselves as pet parents, but losing him was like losing a very integral part of our family. We had him before we had our kids. He was a part of our lives on a daily basis whereas my parents lived far away and we're not a big part of our lives.

So please don't belittle that which you don't know simply because your situation is different.

Yes. I've known people over the years who had no one in their life and their pet was everything to them. In fact, for some, it's a reason to get up every day...the *only* reason.
