What clothing brands do you feel have gone downhill in quality?

I always love coming to this board, as there are way cool tips, and shopping reviews. Seeing as how it's 2011, I've been adjusting my budget a bit (more things have gone up in price), and so it got me thinking about our clothing budget.

We do spend a lot on clothes/shoes over here - 2 adults and 2 kids (3 and 7). I get pretty much everything on sale, but buying higher quality products cost money, but I believe in the long run, we save money on repairs and replacement. Plus, we donate away or recycle to friends/family most, if not all of our clothes, so it's imporant to buy good quality items.

That being said, over the past year, I've seen several brands go downhill in terms of quality, and so I have stopped purchasing from some of them. We have also noticed a smaller footprint on many clothes - shrinking sizes means less fabric, and thus must save manufacturers money, and for children's clothing, they will actually make money, as when you move up in size from toddler, you get a price increase. We are very loyal, and so it's hard when some of our favourite brands go downhill in quality. We have a new HE machine, and wash on delicate, so we are taking great care of our clothes, but unfortunately, cheap fabrics and poor workmanship, seem to be the name of the game with many manufacturers.

Here is my list, in the hopes that it will help those of you with your clothing budget over the coming year:

Columbia - Have noticed a great decline in ski coats. Cheap material, cold spots, and just all around not the high quality they used to be.

Roots - Used to be a staple in our home, when most of the items were still made in Canada. Since a U.S. company purchased, all items are now made in China. Most of the products are of horrible quality, and we no longer purchase any Roots products.

Gymboree - This is a hard one for me, as my kids are outfitted from head to toe in Gymboree. A few years ago, I noticed a difference between Canadian and U.S. clothing, so I no longer purchase any U.S. Gymboree. I was hoping this wouldn't make its way to our Canadian products, but sadly, it has. I have had to return coats for broken zippers, shirts that shrunk, leggings that lost their shape and dresses that just came apart at the seams. We are regular customers, so we get treated like royalty at our local store, and even the manager is starting to worry, as the quality of some of the products is going downhill. Still have great quality baby blankets, tights, metal hair accessories, flip flops and bathing suits.

Haggar - Hubby and I used to buy a lot of Haggar clothing, as it was good quality, but not anymore.

New Balance - Now that they are so mass produced, and many products are made in China (we try to buy made in U.S. shoes as much as possible), we notice slight quality issues such as loose stitches and trim.

Secret/Jockey/Hanes - Only hubby & I purchase, as kids wear Gymboree undergarments, but we have noticed huge quality issues: nylons that come out of package already ripped so can't be worn, socks that don't last past a few washings, etc.

Ending on a positive note, we still find great quality in: The North Face, Land's End, Kirkland/Costco jeans, Tommy Hilfiger, Merrell, Mark's Work Wearhouse (Canadian), Sorel/Kamik footwear and Carter's/Osh Kosh.

So, what does your list consist of? Tiger

The only one I can think of right off the bat is Land's End. Their tops are so thin now that they are practically see-through.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the trend lately and I for one don't like it. I bet the manufacturers think that they will sell two items (the thin top and something underneath) for every top they sold previously. More sales....

I'm another one that thinks Land's End has slipped a lot in quality.

Ann Taylor Loft - This used to be a favorite "go to" for some quick basics especially for work, mostly because it was machine washable, they had great color choices, and it fit me. Now, almost all of their stuff is very skimpy/thin materials, more casual in appearance, and doesn't last nearly as long. (I have some stuff I bought there several years ago that looks much better than what I bought there last year.)

Gap - not so much in the quality, but in the style. They too went more casual over the last 4 years, and DH and I buy far less there. I still buy for DS at babyGap, because it fits him well but you can greatly tell the difference in DH's Gap pants.

Throw Old Navy into that category. I had t-shirts & jeans that I bought back when they first opened that had lasted for quite a few years. But I'd have to say that the clothes in the past 3 years have been in a poorer quality. I had a pair of jeans that didn't even last a month. The t-shirts are thinner, which is good for the summer but not so good for the winter. I just feel like I've been constantly replacing shirts every year that I've bought from Old Navy.

Victoria Secret. I used to wear their bras and underwear exclusively and didn't mind the prices because everything seemed to last forever. Not anymore!

I switched to Soma a few years ago. Now the only thing I buy at VS is lip gloss. Gotta have my Grapefruit blast Beauty Rush!

I agree with Gymboree!! I used to buy a lot more there, now I hardly have any outfits for the kids from them anymore. I got tired of spending the money on what I thought was nice quality (because it used to be), only to wash the outfit and have it either fade terribly, shrink, or just look like it was a lot older than it was. Plus I really haven't cared for their lines lately. I used to want to buy everything in the lines and found it hard to choose. Now I go in the store and 98% of the time leave with nothing because I don't care for the styles.

I buy most of our clothing at Gap, and still find the quality there to be great.

I agree with Land's End, and Hane's socks not being the quality that they have been in the past.

The only other thing that I can think of is Adidas backpacks. I bought one 5 years ago that my DS in HS STILL uses year after year. I bought the same one in August for my DD in 8th grade and it is already falling apart.

My kids are long out of Gymboree, but that's mostly what they wore when they were little. We have Gymboree clothes that went through literally 5 girls (my friend's girls and mine) that still look amazing.

J Crew, especially their cashmere sweaters. They pill like crazy! The price has gone up and the quality has gone down - some business model. I have sweaters of theirs from 10 years ago that look better than ones I bought 3 months ago.

(I know, cry me a river over cashmere sweaters - first world problems. But I buy classic, nontrendy clothes and expect them to last!)

Good topic. I'm finding that I have to be much more selective no matter where I shop. And that is in regard to both quality of the garment and style. I am finding that, very often, the clothes from stores like Walmart and Target hold up just as well if not better than those from more expensive stores like Gap and Dillards. This became really noticable when our school system started requiring that students wear uniforms. We have a pretty simple policy - khaki or navy pants or skirts w/white, navy, or orange shirts (which must have a collar). I've bought uniform pieces at Dillards, Children's Place, Penney's, Land's End, Gap, Walmart, Target, and Kohl's. By far the ones that have held up the best came from Walmart and Target. Got DD a Gap polo shirt back in August and it had holes in it by October. She had plenty of polos to wear so it wasn't as if she was wearing the same one every other day - it just didn't hold up. I found that the shirts from Penney's and Children's Place shrunk quite a bit more than the others. We like the scooter skirts from Dillards but the pants from there shrunk drastically after just a few washings.

I'm also kinda picky about style - I'm no prude but I don't like anything too revealing or garish and I don't care to dress my second-grader like she's headed to a nightclub. I've found our options to be pretty limited.:sad2:

Levi's used to be the gold standard of quality. Now each pair varies in quality and size. One size 12 is huge and the next short and small. Ugh. I also feel that the fabric they use is substandard.

I'm another one that thinks Land's End has slipped a lot in quality.

I agree with that too. I bought a new down coat last week and I can notice a lot of areas where they quality has slipped, elastic in the sleeves, snap issues etc.. Just not what i am used to with lands end.

I'll have to agree on the Land's End items, though the coats seem to continue to be high quality.

On the New Balance shoes, they now make several lines of them. I won't buy the mass retailer versions available in most stores (except for my kids who change size every 6-9 months). However, if you go to the better shoe stores (read more $$), they still carry the truly good New Balance. I get mine at Irvings and their quality is still the same as 10 years ago.

Cool responses, thanks!

1. Land's End - I buy women's clothes and a few men's items at Sears, and just bought a wool coat a few days ago (children's department was removed a few years ago due to lack of sales). I find that pants, coats and sweaters are still great quality, but will admit, now that it has been mentioned, that shirts and even shorts are lacking in quality. I also have a pair of boots that are a couple of years old, and holding up pretty well.

2. New Balance - Doesn't matter where they are purchased over here, as quality is lacking. We buy our shoes mostly from the New Balance store, and we have the same issues whether we buy from the sporting good store. The NB store charges more for the same shoes as well, so quality issues are a nuisance when spending top dollar.

3. Old Navy - I didn't put on the list, as their quality has always been horrible. I did purchase baby/toddler clothes for my DD, and found them to be ok, but everything else is really bad. Shirts are as thin as paper, zippers break on hoodies, size discrepancies, etc.

4. Target/Walmart/Zellers (Canada) - I will disagree that the quality is the same as more costly retailers. We too wore uniforms for years (school doesn't require any longer), and clothes from those stores are horrible. Maybe there is a difference here in Canada, but pretty much everything from Walmart is horrible around here. I don't shop at Walmart as I can't stand that place! Don't buy many clothes from Target when I'm shopping in the states, but I find the items I pick up, or are gifted to us, are of the same low quality as Walmart and Zellers. Although I did pick up a pair of jeans and a hoodie from there the other day, and so far, so good, as well as some hats/mitts/snow pants for kids. Snow pants ripped on the bottom after 1 wearing, but they were only $15.00 a piece, so no big deal, as I'm they are 2nd pairs, so they'll be able to use them next year too.

5. Children's Place - Can't stand the store, and feel that the quality has always been bad, IMHO. I refuse to buy anything from there, as girls styles are tacky, although boys items are a bit better for style, but quality wise, it's utterly horrible.

Such interesting responses, as I notice quality differences between the same retailers in Canada and states. We shop in the states, so it's interesting to see the differences. Regardless, it bothers me that so many clothes don't last as long anymore = more money out of our budget!!!!

Thanks for the responses, Tiger

For me, Victoria's Secret has quickly declined the quality of both bras and panties, and yet they are still charging the same high prices. I didn't mind when they were well made with quality components, but now I refuse to pay those prices for panties that totally fall apart.

For my children, I would have to say Old Navy is a problem. Almost everything I buy for them there falls apart of gets holes in it immediately. That really bothers me.

first thing that came to my mind is Lands end as well

I have not noticed a problem with New Balance, but the pair of shoes I last bought (for my father) were of a discontinued line, so they were "old" to begin with, maybe before any decline in quality? I will have to ask him how they are holding up

My oldest will only wear athletic pants, which no matter the brand seem to get knee holes before he outgrows them.
My youngest gets so many hand me downs, that I literally only buy him socks, underwear, and maybe once a year a pair of shoes...the hand-me-downs that have lasted through several kids are from brands all over the map though....luck of the draw I suppose, unfortunately

I agree with J Crew. I used to buy tons there and their cashmere sweaters do pill horribly and their other sweaters are way too thin. I also think Lilly Pulitzer has gone way down hill. I have twin sets that are 7-8 years old that look beautiful and the older patterns were so fun. The stuff now is cheap, covered in ungly lace, and the sweaters are thin and cheap looking. I have had good luck at Anthropologie and White House Black Market shopping their sales.
