In my experience the most valuable characteristics in a grown man are an even disposition and a respectful attitude... all good things flow from a man like this. I was lucky enough to marry one, he's not perfect and also has many more bells and whistles. In the end, these 2 qualities are what make him a good man, a good husband and a good father.
The quality least likely present in a good husband is arrogance. Once a person decides he/she is better then others they give themselves permission to behave however they see fit, limited only by their own narcissism and predilections. Arrogance is the very opposite of even dispositioned and respectful. I was unlucky enough to be born to one of these so first hand experience says to avoid them at all costs.
I'd take a good poor man over a wealthy arrogant one any day of the week and this is as much true today as when I chose my DH at the age of 20, which was 20 years ago.
