What Car?

With petrol so expensive and my road tax going up to £260 next year it's time to have change of wheels.

I will miss my Pablo, but he's just too expensive to run.

I'm looking for a small hatchback (supermini size) with very good fuel economy, low mileage, low road tax and insurance. Although it must have A/C.

Don't fancy another Citroen and not even going near a Fiat. But open to anything else as long it's the right price, with low mileage and ticks all the boxes.

Any suggestions?

You can't go wrong with a Honda Jazz. It's like a Tardis inside, very reliable, good fuel consumption and road tax at about £105 a year. I love mine!

We've got a Ford Ka, had it since new in 2001 and I would recommend it. Really easy to drive, ours has aircon, leather, cd etc etc. Even quite happy on a private road at 85. Cheap to run and insure.

I think for reliability the Toyota Yaris or the Honda Jazz will come out tops although they wont be the cheapest.
I know you said you didn't want a Fiat but how about the new 500 - super cute...one of the car TV shows really rated it.
If we were ever looking to buy a second car, I'd buy one.

DW has a KA Bit too small though.

My friend just got a new Diesel fiesta. Really low on road tax - about £35 a year.

My fiesta has been really reliable and efficient! And cheap for repairs too if needed.

Another vote for the Ka, we've just bought one for DD who is taking driving lessons, and it's in the cheapest car insurance group

Would highly recommend the Jazz - excellent results for every category from fuel consumption, safety, reliability etc. My DSIL has had one for four years now with no problems.

My little car is a Seat Ibiza - love it. Personally, the Seat's are excellent value for money. Whilst not as 'comfortable' a ride as my DH's company car (but he's got a VW Passat estate), the Seat has everything I want in a car now I'm over my sports car days

Standard sped includes ABS, power steering, central locking, CD player, electric front windows, aircon. My fave 'girly' thing is the central locking system - as soon as the car hits 9mph, it locks everything.

When we got our dog, we thought about changing it for a little jeep type thing, but to be honest, although we could do with one living in the New Forest (the car parks out there are horrendous on your suspension ), the car has been so reliable (I've had it since new 5 years ago) and I don't want to pay any more money in tax and insurance (both are low), we opted to stick with it. Also, bearing in mind DD will be 17 in 2 years time and wanting to learn to drive, this will be an ideal car for her to have.

My last two cars have been Peugeot 206's and I can't fault them. They are cheap to insure and very economical plus they have both come with aircon etc and they tend to also have a good re-sale value

I always wanted a Jazz, I liked the sounds of the 7 speed auto gearbox.

I have a Mazda 1.4 Diesel on the semi auto gearbox, and I'll be sorry to see go when its time to change it. I get roughly 60 mpg out of it, £35 road tax, low insurance (my renewal was £194 for protected comprehensive with legal and personal accident etc), and its a pleasing car to drive.

Its the same engine etc as the Fiesta and the Fusion Diesels.

Why not a Fiat? I have a (Grande) Punto and i love it, no problems with it at all, nice interior, nice looks, and very cheap - You wont get as nice and big a car for the same money - i paid £7200 brand new!!

Used to have a Ka, so many problems with it i don't know where to start, however it was second hand (my first car!!) so doubt you'd have the problems with a new one, tho it is very small and pretty expensive for what you get

I've got a new shape Honda Civic and it is sooooo practical we are staggered. Seats fold up as well as down, it's big enough for 4 adults as well as small enough for me to drive to work each day (60 mile round trip). Does just under 50 mpg in my diesel 2.2L (there are smaller engines too).

Last weekend my son got a 4ft mattress in the back and 2 weeks ago we got 15 3ft round (folding) tables in it - our friends said we'd need 3 trips to transport them - we needed one!
