What can we take ON the train?

We leave on the Autotrain on the 9th and just curious as to how much we can lug on with us.
Meaning, can we take a small cooler and a small carryon?
Will there be room at our coach seats for that?
Both kiddos will take their own little backpack and just thinking that we will need a small carryon too.

My parents did this a couple of years ago and they brought on a small cooler with a bunch of food, and a carry-on with some clothes, snacks, so they could freshen up and change clothes. They left everything else in the car.

They got lucky and were the last car on the train, so they were the first one off.

You can definitely take a small cooler, I think it's a great idea. There is plenty of overhead storage space in coach.

Let us know how the train is. We took the auto train last year and just loved it and are planning on it again for next summer. Last time we splurged for the sleeper car, but we're planning on coach seats next time. For our kids (then 6 and 2) the train was part of the vacation not just traveling!

We have always taken the following on the auto train when traveling in coach:
1. Pillow, sheet & light blanket for each traveler (sheet
and light blanket are slid inside the pillowcase. The
sheet is used to cover the seat so we aren't laying
against the seat that hundreds of people have been
sitting on.) They have pillows but they are about
5" X 8" and totally useless. They also have throw
type blanket but it is not usully sufficient in size
for an adult.

2. Satchel type carry on bags for each person with basic
toiletries (deodorant/toothbrush/toothpaste) small bar
of soap, hand towel & washcloth and a change of
clothes.

3. a small cooler with beverages and maybe a few snacks.

4. DVD player, cd player or ipod, magazines or book or
anything else that we decide to use to occupy our
time.

They do not really limit what you take on the train - within reason that is.
