She failed her school eye test...and I know that is not that reliable so I am taking her to an eye doctor...what are they going to do? Do they dilate their eyes or anything else that she might not like?

I don't remember them giving them any drops not even now at 9 and 12 .

They use pictures to to help them instead of letters. Mostly look in there eyes , cover one , cover the other type thing.

My kids have been going to the eye doctor every years since we both wear glasses. Some don't think they need them when they do so this way we are sure.

My kids have never had their eyes dilated yet and the've been going since about 3 years old (now 10 and 12). They've also never done the puff of air to the eye with the kids.

My dd's have gone to a pediatric opthamologist. He did dilate their eyes.

My mom would never allow our eye doctor to dilate our eyes, and he was fine with that. If she isn't comfortable with it (as she is only 4) I would see if the doctor could skip that part :thumbsup2

That is funny you asked because we just took our 5 year old today. He failed his school test as well. I was worried, but all in all it went well. He did not put drops in his eyes and said he does not do that on first time visits. I was surprised how well he did, unfortunately though he has to get glasses. The doctor was good and seemed to know how to work with kids.

We got the glasses and boy are those frames expensive. I am going to get the one pair through our insurance and was just looking at Zenni optical for a few spare pairs before I jumped on the dis boards. I heard they were good and cheap!

My DD who just turned 6 had her first optical appointment a few weeks ago when school let out for break.

It was a very thorough test, which I really appreciated.

First she looked through the focusing machine, don't you love my technical term?! It was a picture of a farm that automatically measured the focus of her eyes.

Then they tried the puff in one eye. She didn't like it, so they didn't push the second. She then read the letters on the eye chart, then based on all these findings, her eyes were dilated. Then the focusing farm test was repeated and the doctor looked at her eyes through various lenses.

Turns out she's a +3.0 in each eye. I got her two pairs of frames, figured with a kid two was better than one! The doctor recommended polycarbonate lenses, they are more durable but also lighter and thinner. Regular lenses would be highly magnified, like the "coke bottle" glasses. I really was shocked by the cost of glasses!

She's been wearing them about a week now and is doing great.

Good luck to your little one. They will do fine!

We always had the drops done for as long as I can recall, and mom says they did them when I was 4. Yeah, they suck but there's a reason they do them. Blurred vision can signal an issue with the optic nerve and the back of the eye, which is what they look at with dialation. Tell her that if she handles it well, you can go out for ice cream or some other special treat.. bribery isn't always bad!

My daughter goes every year for an eye exam--(she doesn't need glasses or anything but she goes yearly as just part of her regular yearly exams-peditrition for physical, lab for yearly blood work, optometrist for eyes, ENT for hearing test (every other year)etc.) she gets her eyes dilated about once every two years-doesn't bother her at all. I prefer the school not to give her any kind of medical type test-we go to Dr's for that, I don't need them to do any of that!
