What beverages must I pay for out of pocket on DCL?

We were with 2 other families, so we had all the kids down on one end. They all ordered smoothies. It was not much, and it was our fault for not looking at the menu (the price is listed for that one item and the kids did not notice, or care), but we had thought everything on the kids menu would be free so let them have a bit of freedom and order whatever they wanted.

I had noticed the menu but like you many do not.

One other thing not free is the coffee beverages in Cove Cafe. With or without alcohol there is a charge for these (though the snacks in there are free :thumbsup2 )

thanks for the info everyone, i will use the cardboard ones to fill my travel mug

got a question though what's a shirley temple? i'm british and it's not something i've heard of before, is it like a fruit punch type drink?

A Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic drink that kids often times order, as it looks like a fun fancy drink. It is sprite with a little grenadine (a cherry- flavored syrup). The grenadine is red, so it gives it a nice color and most places will garnish them with dherries and other things so they are like a kiddy cocktail. My DDs love them! :thumbsup2

Off topic but a bit of trivia about Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers drinks, one being made with ginger ale or seven up and the other with Coke:

A Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic cocktail (or mocktail) made with ginger ale, grenadine syrup, and orange juice garnished with the maraschino cherry and slice of lemon [1]. The ginger ale is commonly substituted with 7 Up, Sprite, or similar lemon-lime soft drink, and the orange juice is commonly left out. It is often served to children dining with elders to let them share the experience of drinking a cocktail, which is why it is sometimes called a kiddie cocktail.

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel at Waikīkī in Honolulu, Hawaii claims to be the inventor of the Shirley Temple cocktail [2]. There are several other popularized claims as to the origins of the drink. One notes a bartender at Chasen's restaurant in Beverly Hills, California is the inventor [citation needed].

The drink was named for the famous child actress Shirley Temple, who often visited the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Beverly Hills restaurant. She was too young to drink alcoholic cocktails like the adult movie stars when she attended parties or visited with them.

When Temple herself is asked for her opinion of these drinks named for her, she invariably replies that she dislikes them because they are too sweet, and that she does not gain earnings for the use of her name.

A Roy Rogers is a non-alcoholic cocktail (or mocktail) made with cola (such as Coca-Cola) and grenadine syrup, garnished with a maraschino cherry. It is sometimes referred to as a "Darth Vader" or a "Shirley Temple Black"; however, in recent years, both this name and the original "Roy Rogers" have given way to the term "grenadini." It is considered an acceptable cocktail drink for children (since there is no alcohol). For this reason, it may also be called a kiddie cocktail or simply a homemade Cherry Coke. Grenadine is almost always a non-alcoholic beverage. However, buyers should check the label, since some versions contain alcohol.

It was named for the cowboy actor and singer Roy Rogers.

The cups at the soda station are cardboard. You can bring your plastic refillable mug/cups, but please use a fresh cardboard cup to fill them (to avoid the spread of virus)

That's a little extreme. If the soda fountain has a push button, there is zero physical contact with the fountain and the cup. If it's a lever you puch a cup against, the lever is so far down the side of the cup it should not contact where someone was drinking, unless they licked the cup.

Germ interaction is healthy. Obviously, if you know you are sick or have a virus you want to avaoid spreading germs, but it wont kill you to touch a cup were someones saliva was. If that were the case everyteenager in the world would be dead by the time they turn 20. unless they dont kiss on dates anymore.

If you completely isolate yourself from every germ, your body loses its abillity to fight off infection when you do hit a major germ string.

be smart...but dont go overboard.

tap water will be fione for us as well.

If I remember right, it is push button so the cup would not come in contact with anything! Rest assured, someone WILL correct me if I'm wrong!;)

I disagree. I have seen more than one person at places where you can refill your own drink hold the cup right up next to the dispenser instead of putting on the soda filled bottom. Frequently they will fill their drink to the tip and the dispenser invariably will make contact with the liquid that is filling the cup. Many many people do not know about the importance of an air gap and backflow prevention.

I have watched some of these same people not wash after using the restroom, eat with their hands and then drink from the soda fountain. Some germs may be good, but lots of germs can do nasty things to your body especially in the closed environment of a ship.

I would encourage everyone to use a separate clean paper cup with each refill and not to fill their own beverage container. It is far more sanitary to fill the paper cups and transfer the beverage into said container.

Um, how much are these beverages that we have to pay for out of pocket?

For example, how much might a beer be? Or a glass of wine (generally, I know there's a range with wine)? Or a mixed fruity thing with an umbrella? Or a can of diet coke?

And does one need to tip for delivery of said foofy umbrella drink? I read someplace that a 15% gratuity was automatically added. Anyone have any experience with this?

The prices are not too bad I have cocktails and I think they were $5.75 and the tip is added on at bars and in meals.

When you go to pool snack places for pizza etc. do they charge you for a drink, soda, water? I realize if drinks are in cans or bottled water but if you go there instead of a sit down lunch, can you get a free beverage or do you still have to go up to sit downs?

Got Quatro is right - I work in infectious disease - germ interaction is good - antibacterial everything is BAD - it only kills the weak germs & the strong ones survive & become stronger.

Obviously I'm not saying its a good idea to share unwashed items with others. But, out in the world, germs are EVERYWHERE. We don't want to know what goes on in the kitchens behind closed doors. Plus when you go to a public place, you don't want to know who sat there before you, who slept in that motel room before you or if they have draining wounds on their body. We and all our children have been exposed to lotsa, lotsa stuff. Theres no way to cover all the bases to prevent cross contamination of germs. If its not on the paper cups, its on the pop machine button or the lid dispenser or the salt/pepper. Can't think too hard about this if you want to live your life. Otherwise we would all be plastic bubble people.

Can someone answer ? about pizza and fast food spots? What about beverages by the pool when you are getting pizza etc. Do you get free food and then have to go to deck 9 for free drinks?

On the 7 day cruises, there is an Art of Entertaining series. They used to give free drinks at the cocktail making seminar.

Yeah, I'm frugal ;)
You forgot that they also give free accompanying wine with the food at the cooking demos.

As for the deck 9 drink and food question, the beverage station is close to all three fast serve counters. Get your food, then go a few steps to get your drink.
